5.0 out of 5 stars A confident book which could encourage practically everyone, 8 April 2010

What a remarkable and somewhat surprising book this is.

On the surface it looks like just another 'business ego boost' book - the 'hey, you're good kid but read this and you will be even better' kind of thing. But it isn't - it is far more all-inclusive and relevant than that.

Paul McGee starts from the premise that all of us sometimes have genuine confidence issues - for some people they are fleeting problems, for others that may be more long-term. All, however, he argues can be dealt with - and this book gives practical advice and useful pointers as to how.

The book looks at how we can deal with a lack of confidence in key issues that affect our lives - our work, our relationships, and our self-esteem - and gives thought-provoking ideas and real life examples of how to triumph through apparent adversity.

Yes, if you are a businessman that just wants to get ahead further this is a useful tool but just as importantly it offers help and support to people with more deep-seated problems such as a lack of self-worth, ongoing anxiety or problems with those around us. It shows that there is no situation that is truly hopeless and there are no situations where a confident smile can't help however bleak things look.

Easy to read in one sitting - or probably even better in lots of bite-size ones - this is a book I would recommend to everyone who has insecurities, anxieties or occasional lapses in their self-confidence. And that, I suspect, is pretty much everyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Many ideas, 28 Aug 2010

I can only echo the previous reviewers in terms of ease of reading, excellent layout and quality content.

I found this book to be fairly standard in finding ways to motivate yourself to take control of your situation. It has sound advice and followed practically, the ideas work. It all depends on what you want to gain.

It is true that small, positive changes can lead to much bigger personal rewards in the future and as a foundation for bettering yourself, well this is a great little book to help anyone on their way.

A good little read with good advice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really easy to read and quite helpful, 20 Mar 2010
This review is from: Self-confidence: The Remarkable Truth of Why a Small Change Can Make a Big Difference (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
This book is really easy to read with good pacing - it feels like each section has been written so that you can read each chapter in around 20 minutes, and the "personal stories" that you often get with these kinds of books are optional extras at the end. You aren't forced to read them like in a lot of other books. The good thing with this book is that the personal stories are often quite light hearted, easy to read, and add a natural brain rest period to the book, so that you are ready to start concentrating again for the next chapter.

The theory is sound and I found the book quite motivational and encouraging, and felt I gained some confidence generally. I would say that the theory is quite logical, a small change now can make a big change to your future, but is it really remarkable? I'm not so sure. Either way the book is easy to read and therefore well worth buying, as it's likely that you'll finish reading the book quite quickly, whereas I found a lot of books I've read are often left on the shelf after 2 chapters as I've simply lost interest in them. Not so with this book. Although saying that it's not particularly in depth, and perhaps glosses over the background reasoning behind some of the suggestions.
