***2nd Edition, September 2012***

The only self-publishing guide with a No Saying "Gatekeepers" rule, now fully revised and expanded

Do you think that no one has the right to stand between you and your published writer dreams? That the publishing industry is going down in flames and self-publishers are going to rise like a 99c phoenix from the ashes? That all literary agents are interested in doing is blogging sarcastically about the rhetorical question at the start of your query letter, that editors will just use your submitted manuscript for kindling and that you'll be senile before you hear back from either of them? That once you've uploaded the book you finished yesterday afternoon to Amazon, it'll be mere minutes before the money starts rolling in and you can quit your day job? Do you say things like "gatekeepers", "The Big Six", "E.L. James", "legacy publishing" and "indie author" a lot? Are you self-publishing to "show them all"?

If you've answered yes to one or more of these questions then I do apologise, but this isn't the book for you.

This book is for writers who consider self-publishing to be a good Plan B, or even a sideline to traditional publication. Who want to do it the cheapest and easiest way possible while still producing a quality product. Who understand that much like Starbucks outlets and Nespresso coffee machines, traditional and self-publishing can peacefully co-exist. Writers who know that they don't have to sell a million copies of their book to start earning a living from their writing, but that they do have to work hard and treat it like a business. Who are blessed with common sense and live in the real world at least most of the time. Who find my jokes funny, at least occasionally.

If this sounds like you, then Self-Printed: The Sane Person's Guide to Self-Publishing may be just the "How To..." guide you were looking for.

It will tell you everything you need to know in order to publish a Print On Demand paperback and e-book, and (crucially) sell them, without sounding like anti-Big Publishing propaganda produced by the Ministry of Truth.

Be warned: you are now entering a No Saying "Gatekeepers" Zone...

PRAISE FOR SELF-PRINTED:

"An exceptional breath of realism, real knowledge and hard experience--don't dream of self-publishing your book without it. This is the self-publishing guide to read if you actually care about the quality of your writing and your readers." --Nicola Morgan, award-winning author of 90 books--including the Carnegie-nominated WASTED and WRITE TO BE PUBLISHED-- and the blog Help! I Need a Publisher!

"The best thing about Catherine is that she not only lives the dream, but offers you a stepladder up to join her. The advice she gives is utterly practical--because she's done what she describes--and the whole [book] is suffused with humour. I am a fan." --Alison Baverstock, author of IS THERE A BOOK IN YOU...? and senior lecturer on the Publishing MA at Kingston University (UK)

"The BEST book on self-publishing ... Seriously, GET THIS NOW!" --David Wright, co-author of the bestselling YESTERDAY'S GONE series

About the Author

CATHERINE RYAN HOWARD is the bestselling self-published author of MOUSETRAPPED: A Year and A Bit in Orlando, Florida and BACKPACKED: A Reluctant Trip Across Central America. Her blog, Catherine, Caffeinated—which she started after discovering that straightforward, realistic self-publishing advice that wasn't laced with chants of "death to the Big Six!" was hard to find—has become the go-to resource for the pragmatic self-publisher. Catherine's success story has been featured in the likes of The Irish Examiner, The Irish Independent and The Sunday Times newspapers, and she has been interviewed on BBC Radio Ulster, RTE Radio 1 and Newstalk (Ireland). In February 2012 she was chosen to deliver the first ever self-publishing course at Faber & Faber's Faber Academy in Bloomsbury, London, where she continues to be a guest tutor. 5.0 out of 5 stars Self-Printed 16 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am working towards self-publishing a novel and I'm so glad I bought this book. It is literally packed full of useful information, from starting a blog to creating a cover (hint: don't do the cover yourself!) and everything in between. When the book is produced, Catherine then goes through how to sell it.

Catherine explains the self-publishing process the way she did it, in which you take care of the bits you can do yourself, but realise what needs to be outsourced to other more qualified people - like the cover design and editing.

The best thing is that she takes you through the whole process step by step, and makes even the awkward bits seem accessible. And it's all injected with a healthy dose of realism (because no matter how nice it might be, we're not going to become millionaires overnight!). Reading this book is more like having a chat with a friend over a cup of coffee and a slice of cake.

I can't recommend this book enough for anyone who intends self-publishing, but wants to go about it properly and produce the best book they can - rather than something that screams "amateur" and puts people off.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book I refer to again and again 26 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I purchased this book months ago and have used it umpteen times for various things that I've created, explored and tried along my self-publishing journey. Catherine's tongue in cheek humour kept me smiling through a book that, without it, would have been just the same as lots of 'how to do it' books.

I particularly found useful the way the sections were set out. I go back to them again and again. I've recently published another book on Kindle, created a Facebook page and website with Catherine's easy to follow guides. I reckon the advice and the instruction in this book has saved me hours so far and will continue to do so. Mel Sherratt, Taunting the Dead and The Estate Series.

A friend recommended Catherine's blog to me when she heard I was writing a book, I'm so glad she did. The blog is full of useful information, but I didn't have time to sift through it all. It's so useful that she's collated it all into this book. It's packed with lots of really useful information by someone who's been there and done it. It has saved me hours of time and given me the confidence to get out there and give it a go myself. Not only is it practical and useful, but it's funny too. Her playful personality make's it fun to read a subject that could be really boring. I've already started putting many of her suggestions into practice and am delighted at the results. If you're considering self-publishing buy it - you'll be glad you did.
