Product Description

The Financial Times, 29.06.96

Much in Self-Help is still stimulating. Its central precept - the value of hard work, ingenuity, perseverance, thrift, a solid education - is in tune with American notions of workfare, not to mention the Labour party's espousal ... of a shift in the mission statement of the British social security system from 'hand-out' to 'hand-up'. Welfare financed by taxation is no longer chic. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Lord Harris, The Times, 29.06.96

So far from a shallow exposition of 'economic man', Self-Help is an uplifting study of individual morality brought to life by personal examples. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

The moment I started to Read Samuel Smiles book called Self Help I knew I would enjoy it. For anyone with a jot of interest in developing thinking that is both practical and progressive then this book is for you. Mr. Smiles looks at the lives of others, many of whom are now household names, others you may not have heard of, but he looks at their perserverance and tenacity and how these qualities rather than some magic genius got them where they wanted to be in their field of endeavour. It gets a bit long-winded in places but not too many. It's amazing that such good common sense abounded over a hundred years ago, yet to-day in modern Britain we now have such a dearth of this sort of thinking. Read and apply and you can't go wrong, a very inspiring work. My only complaint with this version is, there are no illustrations and his many references are not footnoted, and as many are in French or Latin, no translation is offered - not the end of the world - as the actual content is such worthwhile stuff.

I read this book with interest, and even bought a copy for a friend! It's more a set of small biographies than what we currently understand as a Self-help book. Very interesting, and an uplifting read.

Self-Help? 30 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was draw to this book because it was mentioned on the TV series Larkrise to Candleford. I first search Amazon just to see if it was a real book. When I discovered that it was I thought I would like to have a closer look.

It is nothing like a modern 'self help' book. It is actually more of a self help for the working man about building up self respect and improving society by improving yourself. It is wordy but readable and I am still busy making my way through it.

It is thought provoking and philosophical maybe not everybodies choice.
