Product Description

Laura Branigan's third album, Self Control, capitalised on the Euro-dance-pop and affecting ballads that made her an international star while allowing her to grow as a vocalist. Her collections, always uneven in terms of material, benefit mostly from her stellar voice, and this is no exception. "The Lucky One" and "Heart" start slow and build to a crescendo, perfectly showcasing her range without being obvious. The title track, about finding sex in the seamy side of town, sparked a bit of a controversy, but ended up being her second biggest hit. The song itself works, but Branigan was never a sex bomb, so the fact that she pulls it off is indicative of her power as a performer. "Ti Amo" is the album's theatrical ballad, which works well with breathy, dramatic vocals. She even pulls off a graceful cover of "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" that is clear and simple, while "Breaking Out" and "Take Me" are perfect examples of synthesizer-driven '80s dance ditties. The only slow moments come with "Silent Partners" and "With Every Beat of My Heart," and that's not because they're ballads. The production bogs them down, and the lyrics are so pedestrian, you won't find yourself moved by them except to skip to the next song. --All Music Guide

This CD is not called "The Best of Branigan" or something in that line. It is however the best album ever published by Laura Branigan. It's really a shame that she had to part with her "ex-producer", because it seems that everything was going according to plan. This is a real must have. If you are a fan of Laura Branigan, or simply have heard of her, then you MUST buy this one. Have lots of joy with it.

laura had a voice you would know a million miles away...i bought this album when it was released in 1984 at the tender age of 17 and still to this day its one of my favourite albums of all time!

every song is written, sung and produced to perfection! yes it is drenched in the 80s sound (not a bAd thing) but dont let that take you away from 10 tracks that will literally stop you in your tracks!

from the opening "the lucky one" with its soaring vocals, "self control" the huge international hit to the closing "with every beat of my heart" with it american rock epic feel this album is simply stunning!

laura handles the euro/rock/pop of "heart" "take me" and breaking out with such power! however when you get to the three big ballads you will cry.....

"silent partners" a song about having an affair with a married man is heartfelt and painful..."will you still love you tomorrow" the carole king classic is the best ever recording of the this track by anyone the simple arrangement and heartwretching vocals will stop you in your tracks!

they always say save the best to last...well "ti amo" is lauras defining moment...some of the most amazing vocals ever delivered on a song that is simply amazing...its as good as the "winner takes it all" by abba...and thats saying something!!

I PROMISE IF YOU HAVE EVEN LOOKED AT THIS ALBUM FOR WHATEVER REASON YOU WILL ADORE IT!!!

Laura covered several different styles of music in her career, but for a Rock fan like me this has to be the best thing she ever did. Self Control itself is, for this listener, second only to Gloria in terms of Laura's best songs.

But this disc has so much more than Self Control to offer. The Lucky One is another high-powered song that shows the power of Laura's voice admirably, as do Heart, Satisfaction, Breaking Out, Take Me, and With Every Beat of my Heart.

If you only know Laura's more powerful songs, there are surprises on offer here. Laura's version of Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, featuring just voice and piano, is far and away my favourite version of the song.

Moving on to the bonus tracks, it's unfortunate that there's nothing previously unreleased on offer. We have two different versions of The Lucky One, the 12" version of Self Control, and a Special Dance Mix of Satisfaction. The remixed versions of The Lucky One and Satisfaction don't improve on the originals (although the sparingly-used echo on the vocals on the first remix of The Lucky One is very good). As this would have been a five-star disc even without the bonus songs, I cannot possibly remove a star.

I love this CD. I bought it as it was a favourite in the eighties so a bit of nostalgia. Classic tracks like Gloria, Ti Amo and Self Control. Listening to the lyrics now, I realise that she was ahead of her time in the subject matter-Take Me! Her cover of Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow is beautiful.
Anyone who was a fan in the 80's or looking for a bit of easy listening/soft rock would love this CD.

Not a lot to add, but I have to take issue with the All Music Guide's dismissal of Silent Partners. That song is the best on the album, along with Self-Control itself. It's an affecting ballad with great words! And LB may not have been a 'sex-bomb', but what of it? She was a pretty lady with a fine voice. Isn't that enough?
