Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Self Assembly is every bit as ramshackle as the title suggests, but oddly engaging for that. Noonday Underground, essentially a collaboration of vocalist Daisy Martey and one-time Adventures In Stereo sonic sculptor Simon Dine, have made something marvellous here, a record as naïve as sunrise yet post-modern as you like: imagine the original soundtrack of "Hair" rewritten by Saint Etienne. Though "Self Assembly" was clearly recorded on a fairly tight budget, its creators have had the wit to work the necessarily lo-fi sound to their advantage: the cheesy organs and antique special effects have an honesty about their poverty that borders on the soulful. There are too many instrumental tracks--Martey's voice, on the evidence of "The Light Brigade" and "London" is something we could all stand more of--but enough warped pop sunshine to leave the listener hoping that the Noonday Underground project is put on a more permanent footing, and soon. --Andrew Mueller

By Mrs. A. C. Whiteley VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
It's hard to find the exact words to categorize this superb album (Paul Weller, no less is a huge fan). It was originally issued in 2000 (with a different cover)and clearly is rooted in a lot of the best of 'feel good' Sixties music. No obvious stand out track, but this is not a criticism as all of the tracks are superb. (Although if you were to push me, I'd have to go for Marvellous). Very upbeat, very musically competent, with hypnotic almost choral vocals, this is definite party music and comes highly recommended.

This album catches the spirit of 60's northern soul and adds a modern day feeling to it. It also has the melody and the spirit to make you want to sing and dance all day. The highlight undoubtably is 'London' with Daisy Marteys vocals giving the song all the drive it needs. You will not be disappointed if you like good music.

mod rod god 30 Jan 2003
Format:Audio CD
an album full of inspirational mod-soul tunes. the brilliant london is a gauranteed stomper and the rest of the album follows suit. its a refreshing album that has influences stamped firmly from the sixties but manages to sound new and innovative something that many other mod albums fail to do. buy it, play it to your mates and become admired, simple!
