Product Description

Neither the Broadway nor the London performances of 'White Horse Inn' was recorded commercially but what survives on rare transcription discs is a 1935 radio broadcast with the Broadway cast starring Kitty Carlisle, which we have restored for this CD issue. British and German period recordings which best illustrate the bouncy melodic charms of this zany musical extravaganza have also been found to complement this release.

Im weissen Rössl - its original German title - premiered at Berlin's Grosses Schauspielhaus on 8 November, 1930 for 416 performances. White Horse Inn contrasts the dizzy clash of cultures of cosmopolitan Berlin and rural mountainside St. Wolfgang in which country bumpkins and big city slickers laugh at themselves and each other! A transfer to London was extremely successful before Broadway got to see the show.

This is a splendid production from Sepia recalling the international hit show "White Horse Inn", a great pre-war musical extravaganza. They have included a rare 1936 broadcast featuring the original cast of the American production and selected recordings of the musical items to complete the compilation. Recordings by Jack Hylton and his Orchestra and Rolando and his Blue Salon Orchestra date from the time of the highly successful London production. A large part of the CD is taken up with recordings by German artists and dance bands. Three of these feature Max Hansen, who we learn from the extensive notes, appeared in productions of the show across continental Europe and Scandinavia. Thanks to Sepia we get a real taste of a sadly neglected musical; preserving it for those interested in the musical theatre genre.

"White Horse Inn" was a solid score with memorable melodies which are well worth reviving. I certainly enjoyed listening to the different interpretations presented here, particularly "It Would Be Wonderful" and "Goodbye". The title song is fairly catchy and I can imagine that theatregoers would have left humming or whistling it after a few hours of first class entertainment.

The accompanying booklet is full of detail and beautifully illustrated. If only all CD reissues were accorded such a high standard of production. The sound quality is exemplary, even in the radio item which clearly shows some sign of age, and the commercial 78s have been transferred beautifully.

We may never see the show in person, but this is surely the next best thing!

Firstly be aware that it is not a soundtrack of the show but a collection of items from it by various 1930s bands and singers.

A fascinating glimpse of the 1930s and some very good renditions of items from the show. Others would frankly have been better lost in time and their sole merit is in their continued existence.

The German language versions of the songs are, probably, the best items followed by the Jack Hylton recordings. Far less good are the American items which were probably humorous when recorded but suffer from changing tastes over 70 years and from the cultural understanding gap that is the Atlantic.

Despite the criticisms it is, nevertheless, well worth having if it suits your tastes.

Not perhaps everyone's cup-of-tea! - but coupled with Musical Theatre and Nostalgia for the period, this little package is worth a try, "Sepia" have gone overboard with its CD. Presentation , 23 tracks including extracts from the 1936 American Broadcast with its original Broadway Cast : a minor query within the splendid booklet supplied concerning Vocal Gems performed by The Light Opera Company with Orchestra conducted by Ray Noble, in this case I venture to suggest should be credited to Carrol Gibbons who was Musical Advisor to HMV. at this time of the 1931 recording? : Did M-G-M. produce the film "Puttin'On The Ritz" as detailed in Sepia's notes? , an early talkie movie of that name was released during 1930 and featured Harry Richman. The a- for-mentioned booklet is very well produced and very informative with illustrations, I liked this excellent issue very much indeed and wish it every success . Recommended.. A little hint to Sepia how about a similar issue contributed to "Victoria And Her Hussar" !!

I expected a proper recording of the show, but in fact it was just various very old tracks at random by assorted different artists and bands. Some may find it of historical interest, but I have given it to a charity shop
