Biography

An interview with Squarepusher about Shobaleader One, his latest project:

1. What is Shobaleader One?

Shobaleader One is my band. Last summer a bunch of kids got in contact
with me. They were talking about forming an ensemble, which I thought
was a ridiculous idea but I was impressed by their perseverance so we
met up. Their idea was that they wanted the 'fantasy group' I had
written about in connection… Read more in Amazon's Squarepusher Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Tom Jenkinson, the man behind Squarepusher's dark avant-junglist facade, is a remarkably prolific composer; over the 12 months prior to the release of Selection Sixteen, he'd already churned out an album--the squalid jazz-fusion of Music Is Rotted One Note --and a clutch of mini-albums that rewrote pretty much every musical rulebook going. Selection Sixteen, though, finds Squarepusher's good karma running low; the much-vaunted return to the high-octane rave of Jenkinson's early material proves misleading, as tracks like "Square Rave" and "Dedicated Loop" pop out as still-born electronic takes on his groundbreaking, organic forays into free jazz. Jenkinson needs to rein himself in before letting it all hang out again, and Selection Sixteen marks the point that he's put his first foot wrong. Fear not, though--he's got a remarkable capacity for reinvention, and every miss surely leads to some more chaotic, jumbled, peerlessly-addled hits. Rave on, indeed. --Louis Pattison

Good points: Square Rave, Dedicated Loop, Tomorrow World, these three being excellent danceable yet mellow tunes with a depth of sound that was lacking in the Big Loada/HN Daddy-era. The clear sound and slightly more ambient feel than on previous 'Pusher releases.

Bad points: Out of 17 tracks, about ten of them last under a minute, and are completely pointless. Notably so is Tesko, which consists of twenty seconds of Tom Jenkinson doing a Mr Bean impression.

For £7 you might as well buy it if you're into this sort of ambient/jazz/drum'n'bass fusion, but don't expect too much, although the tracks mentioned earlier are well worth it, there's little of interest after track 5.

underrated? 6 Feb 2005
Format:Audio CD
If you come to this album expecting twisted drill'n'bass you will be disappointed.. but to my mind this is the best constructed and simply the most intelligent of squarepusher's efforts. Beautifully melodic yet fairly heavy electronica contrast with improv jazz snippets: you will need an open mind to deal with the transitions but ultimately (unlike most other warp releases) this record works as an album as opposed to a collection of potential single releases. One of my favourite 'electronica' albums, I rate this as highly as aphex's selected ambient works for its breadth and melodic sensibility.

it tastes good to me 2 July 2001
Format:Audio CD
selection sixteen was the first squarepusher cd that i bought i loved this cd right away. this was a good intro to squarepusher because it is not as crazy as some of his other releases. some of his other disc are sometime to much for first time listeners this one seems more electronica influenced it is really teched out yet also jazzy.
