Importantly, this collection begins with 'Cuba Libre', an account of a visit to Cuba which proved crucial in the development of Jones' political consciousness; from this point on, he moved from the vague, drop-out politics of the Beat/New York poets with whom he'd been associated, and towards a consideration of the idea of revolution, as well as a much closer analysis of his own position, as an African-American, in the culture (see also the poem 'Betancourt'). As he writes towards the end of the piece: "The rebels among us have become merely people like myself who grow beards and will not participate in politics. Drugs, juvenile delinquency, complete isolation from the vapid mores of the country, a few current ways out. But name an alternative here." One might say that Baraka's career since then has been dedicated to finding that alternative.

This edition was published by William Morrow at the end of the 70s; the well-balanced and generous selection includes, alongside the aforementioned 'Cuba Libre', substantial excerpts from the novella-length works 'The System of Dante's Hell' and 'Six Persons', both of which find fresh ways of approaching autobiographical material; four complete plays ('Dutchman', 'The Slave', 'Great Goodness of Life' and 'What was the Relation of the Lone Ranger to the Means of Production?

This book is a good introduction to the great Baraka. It should be accompanied by Selected Poems. If you want to better understand the American experience, Baraka is a must read.
