The quotation from Hermione Lee [above] has been used prominently on all the new Virago editions of Sylvia Townsend Warner's fiction and it's deserved especially on this excellent collection of short stories. As a whole, Warner's short fiction isn't faultless but any remotely sympathetic reader would be hard-pushed not to be well-satisfied with this comprehensive selection which saves you the avid-fan trouble of hunting down the original publications (I've done that too- trust me, you're not missing much...). A perfect box of mixed chocolates that you can repeatedly revisit whether you fancy a hard chewy center or softer happy-ever-after...
