Studying Scottish poetry is an essential element of the Higher Still English course and this book is written with the express purpose of preparing students for this part of the exam.
From the Author
An integrated work scheme on Scottish poetry
Each chapter deals with a different poet and contains: notes on the poet and his/her work; suggested study points for discussion under the headings Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation; points for revision at two levels; critical response guides; an unseen textual analysis exercise at two levels; suggestions for critical essays; and ideas for writing, with some help. At the end of the book, there are sections on Useful Definitions and some general guidance on writing both critical essays and essays for the Language Study Unit. I chose poets who are frequently taught in our schools but, as well as some old favourites, I have included some of their less familiar poems. You will be able to find thematic links, sometimes between poems by the same poet and sometimes between poems by different poets. (A companion book is available, also from Amazon - 'Selected Scottish Poems Analysed'.)
