Product Description

Sophie Hannah's first book was greeted with amazement. The Poetry Review declared, 'Shall I put it in capitals? SOPHIE HANNAH IS A GENIUS.' Each subsequent collection has been formally more inventive, thematically more complex, yet each has met with a similar welcome., and she has become that rare thing, an acclaimed and bestselling poet. Published for the first time in Penguin, this volume includes all of Hannah's best loved verses from The Hero and the Girl Next Door, Hotels Like Houses, Leaving and Leaving You and First of the Last Chances.

About the Author

Sophie Hannah was born in Manchester in 1971, and now lives in West Yorkshire. She has published four collections of poetry and is a regular performer of her own work. In 1995 she won an Eric Gregory Award for her first poetry book, The Hero and the Girl Next Door, and in 1996 she won an Arts Council Award for her second collection, Hotels Like Houses. In June 2004, her fourth poetry book, First of the Last Chances, was chosen for the Poetry Book Society's 'Next Generation' promotion.

Sophie also writes fiction and won first prize in the 2004 Daphne Du Maurier Festival short story competition. In May 2007, Sort of Books will publish her first collection of short stories. Her latest novel, Little Face, is published by Hodder & Stoughton.

A New View of Poetry 26 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
I have not read poetry since my children were young but found this book full of dry humour. The poems either made me smile or laugh out loud. I have enjoyed her fiction but surprised myself by enjoying her poetry more. If you want a smile give this a try!

Disappointing 16 April 2009
By booksetc TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Read somewhere that these poems are now studied for GCSE/A-level which would suggest that the examining boards have fallen for the hype on the back cover. There's a couple of quirky lines that might raise a smile, but on the whole this work seems very mediocre ... and at its worst is verging on Pam Ayres. They are very samey; generally about some man who has let the author down ... if she was a friend, you'd be tempted to say Get Over It. Poetry of the Woman's Magazine School of literature. 'The brightest young star in British poetry?' Let's hope not!

Unfair sex 30 May 2009
Format:Paperback
Your Men! They pepper pages
In a most peculiar way
The men you wrote a poem on
For lack of pepper spray

And yet I think you worth your salt
On the occasions it appears
Your non-man-hating poems dance
And waltz between the ears

Please quote this praise right back at them
If people dissapprove of you
That half a dozen good ones are
Six more than they could do

Don't say I said the others drag
I read them, every one
You may however say I found
Not all so good as some
