About the Author

Robert Graves (1895-1985) was a poet, novelist and critic. His first volume of poems, Over the Brazier (1916), reflected his experiences in the trenches, and was followed by many works of poetry, non-fiction and fiction. Format: Paperback
This new selection of Robert Graves is of a very manageable size - and gives a sense of Graves in a number of different dimensions. The war poems which figure largely in the early part of the book are particularly effective, but the anthology demonstrates a poet of considerable versatility. I really enjoyed reading this - and indeed it left me wanting more.

Grave has a unique voice and his choice of word defied definition. Each poem is straightforward, perfectly crafted and moving. One can only absorb a bit at a time.

This was a birthday present for my husband. We had recently visited Robert Graves' home in Majorca, but the books there were more expensive. Delivery was earlier than expected and much appreciated.

HASH(0x97a7f660) out of 5 stars Graves the war poet 1 Mar. 2014
By Mark F. Isham - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Graves is a moving war poet and editor Michael Longley restorers that perspective in this selection. Graves downplayed his role as war poet in his later years. We had to move through Graves the poet of The White Goddess and myth, and the related period of Graves the love poet. Editor Longley helps us see the whole career more clearly--and since Graves matured during World War One the return to the War perspective returns us to the essential Graves.
