Product Description

"Bloomsbury Poetry Classics" are selections from the work of some of our greatest poets. The series is aimed at the general reader rather than the specialist and carries no critical or explanatory apparatus. This can be found elsewhere. In the series the poems introduce themselves, on an uncluttered page and in a format that is both attractive and convenient. The selections have been made by the distinguished poet, critic and biographer Ian Hamilton. Robert Browning was born in 1812. He won fame as a poet in his mid-twenties but, with the publication in 1840 of the deeply obscure "Sordello", was thought to have wasted his early promise. For the next 20 years his work was received with amused suspicion. In 1845 he began his famous courtship of Elizabeth Barrett. They married in 1846 and therafter lived mainly in Italy until Elizabeth's death in 1861. During the 1860s, Browning's popularity revived with "Men and Women" and "The Ring and the Book", and by the time he died in 1889 his reputation as the most original of the great Victorian poets was thoroughly secure.

About the Author

Robert Browning (1812-1889) attended the newly founded University of London for a year before travelling widely on the Continent in the 1830s and 1840s. After a clandestine courtship, he married Elizabeth Barrett in 1846 and they lived in Italy until her death in 1861. He is one of the most significant and inventive of Victorian poets.

Daniel Karlin is Professor of English at University College, London. He has edited The Penguin Book of Victorian verse.

Along with Tennyson, Rosetti and Clough, Robert Browning ranks as one of the great poets of the Victorian age; although many argue that his wife, Elizabeth Barrett, wrote the better work. Browning's poetry ranges from the obscure (and early) epic poems of Sordello to the mature dramatic monologue's of 'My Last Duchess' and 'Porphyria's Lover', poetry that is much more distinguished, stylish and confident.

Generally speaking, Penguin have succeeded in compiling Browning's output into a 'Selected' volume that is representative of his accalimed mature work, whilst providing an aperture into the more densely allusive work, by including difficult poems like 'Caliban upon Setebos'. From reading this volume a reader should be able to make an informed decision as to whether they want to dig deeper into Browning's oeuvre.

In a 'Selected' there will always be one or two omissions that are a bit of disappointment ('Rabbi Ben Ezra' is not included), but generally the selections here make good sense. There's also an excerpt from 'Pippa Passes' which provides a glimpse of Browning work as a playwright.

The book features a brief introduction from Daniel Karlin and in-depth notes on each of the poems, making the book particularly geared towards students. The emphasis is very much on providing the reader with a grounding in Browning's work and an extra layer of depth on top of that, so readers should be able to develop their knowledge of one of the most important poets of the nineteenth century.

The poet of dramatic monologue 11 Nov 2004
By Shalom Freedman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is the opening of one of Browning's most well- known poems "Rabbi Ben Ezra"

Grow old along with me!

The best is yet to be,

The last of life, for which the first was made:

Our times are in His hand

Who saith ' A whole I planned,

Youth shows but half; trust God: see all,

nor be afraid!'

Browning is a poet of the inner life. His dramatic monologues are in the words of F.B. Pinion the editor of the Collins Edition of ' Dramatis Personae' centered on ' the thought- processes and mental outlook of his characters than in dramatic action" The

poems are rich in consideration of the moral and religious problems of his time. Lovers of poetry and students of human relationships can certainly be enriched by the reading of these poems.
