Product Description

Product Description

Published in order of first publication as far as possible, this selection ranges from initial offerings such as 'Tinker's Wife' and 'Inniskeen Road: July Evening' to his tragic masterpiece 'The Great Hunger' (1942) and his celebratory later verse, 'To Hell with Common Sense' and 'Come Dance with Kitty Stobling', which show his increasing comic verve and detachment. The first comprehensive selection of Kavanagh's poetry to be published, this volume offers a timely reassessment of a poet unfairly neglected outside Ireland.

About the Author

One of the major figures in the modern Irish poetic canon, Patrick Kavanagh (1904-67) was a post-colonial poet who released Anglo-Irish verse from its prolonged obsession with history, ethnicity and national politics. His poetry, written in an uninhibited vernacular style, focused on the 'common and banal' aspects of contemporary life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romantic realism, 8 May 2003
Kavanagh was one of the first Irish poets to create poetry out of local and native backgrounds. Though many of his poems were published posthumously, the quality and breadth of his work makes some of today's so called 'experts' look pale in comparison. His poetry is direct, unpretentious, personal and often very moving. It is also refreshingly ‘real’. Kavanagh could convey the magic of ordinary and often harsh rural life in his poems. Even though he may be not recognised internationally, Kavanagh's impact on modern Irish poetry has been and will be enormous.

1.0 out of 5 stars Major errors nullify almost everything else, 28 Dec 1999
By A Customer
For a lady who comes from the area there are 2 major errors which make a mess of everything else. See pages 154 and 161...sole-plate is not a horseshoe and diddy is not a vagina

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Selection of Kavanagh's poems., 29 Jan 2009

(REAL NAME)
This book provides an excellent selection of Kavanagh's poems including all the most famous and best. Don't be put off by the remarks below - this is an excellent book at a great price. Treat yourself to arguably the best Parochial poetry ever written, rivalling that of R.S. Thomas.
