Book Description

29 Jan 2004 0140188908 978-0140188905
RS Thomas was the greatest religious poet writing in English in the 20th century, but the 270 poems he chose for this definitive selection reveal a wide range of themes and concerns. He was a passionate Welsh patriot, but also an outspoken critic of his countrymen. His poems are an expression of his lifelong argument with himself, of his insistent search for God. In them he grapples with ideas of Welshness, with issues of technology, pollution, the decline of culture. He wrote too about love, about landscape, nature and birds. His is an urgent, prophetic and unique voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars RS Thomas selected poems 10 May 2011
Format:Paperback
Beautiful poems from a man riven with contradictions yet exquisitely in touch with his native earth and the generations of those that had lived and toiled on it. An excellent introduction to his work, moving and sad, for example the poem on the death of the artist M E Eldridge to whom he was married:

We met under a shower of bird notes.
Fifty years passed, love's moment in a world in servitude to time.
She was young; I kissed with my eyes closed and opened them on her wrinkles.
'Come' said death, choosing her as his partner for the last dance.
And she who had done everything with a bird's grace,
opened her bill now for the shedding of one sigh no heavier than a feather.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! 28 Oct 2009
By Wendy
Format:Paperback
Some powerful poems! deep emotions portrayed in just a handful of words. Always need to read to the end of each poem - there is often a twist there, or a final 'zap' for the mind!
