Product Description

Sidestep into modern Himalayan legend, join an ocean crossing that traverses more than just the sea; discover an 18th century mermaid incursion, and try to dodge the paparazzi in your head. Nine stories, each with a new afterword, by the author of Publishers Weekly starred novels Genetopia and The Accord. Includes new story "Protection".

'Segue: Into the Strange is a wonderful collection of short stories, set in various, sometimes-invented places. Keith Brooke's strange, other-worldly locations and cultures are flawless in their texture and rationality. There wasn't a tale that did not have me hooked from the start.'
--Garry Kilworth

'Keith Brooke's prose achieves a rare honesty and clarity, his characters always real people, his situations intriguing and often moving.'
--Jeff VanderMeer

'"I am so here! Genetopia is a meditation on identity - what it means to be human and what it means to be you - and the necessity of change. It's also one heck of an adventure story. Snatch it up!'
--Michael Swanwick

'Genetopia is quite remarkably fascinating.'
--John Clute

5.0 out of 5 stars A great collection of short stories 18 May 2011
By Dom
Format:Kindle Edition
I discovered Keith Brooke when I first read his novel Genetopia a while ago, and when I saw this collection of his short stories I pounced on it for my new Kindle.
There are nine stories in the collection, all different in tone and setting to each other (with the exception of two semi-related tales - 'Passion Play' and 'Genetopia'). The stories are almost all strong (the only weak link in my opinion is actually the title piece - 'Segue' - which is a little too ambiguous for my taste). Several of them are standouts - 'Passion Play' and 'Head Shots' being the two strongest tales. Also worthy of mention are the amusing 'Doctor Bull's Intervention' and 'Hannah' - the former being a highly amusing tale based on a Jules Verne original, and the latter being a dark cyberpunk exploration of humanity and morality with a disturbing twist at the end.
All of the stories are written well, the pacing is just right, and there are some believable and sympathetic characters. The settings sometimes feel a little cliched (the old London setting of 'Hannah' would be, despite the cyberpunk flourishes, familiar to any reader of Arthur Conan Doyle, for example), but they're always well drawn and vivid.
If you're an established fan of Brooke you might want to make sure you've not read these tales before - all but one have previously appeared in magazines at one point or another - and if you haven't you'll definitely want to pick this up. If you're new to him I'd recommend this collection whole-heartedly. A great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Segue 9 Mar 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
As usual with Keith Brooke, there are some excellent, clearly-written stories here. The title story sees the author...well, segue into the mainstream, as he leaves science fiction behind to breathe a different (Kashmiri) air in a story of identity misplacement. And if 'Passion Play' is not a warning against the dangers of unprotected sex in an sf milieu, then I don't know what it is.
