Vancouver 2010 1 Mar 2010

Being an ice hockey player, the winter Olympics are something I really look forward to and part of this are the Olympics games which are always released on X-Box 360. So, I ordered this game hoping to get my fix of the Olympics at home.

The game was never going to reach the heights and realism of a game like NHL 2010 but I was hoping for some excitement, good game modes and addictive gameplay.

How wrong I was.......

This game is sadly lacking in any real depth. The Olympic mode feels like it has been thrown together - with the non appearance of any medals and the fact you only compete against 3 other nations.
The in-game play is equally as bad with unrealistic timings (you can go from being 2 seconds up to 4 seconds down between one gate in the skiing - no matter how well you ski) and there is just an amateur feel to the whole proceedings.

Whilst alot more difficult, Beijing 2008 far surpasses Vancouver 2010 and Wii games such as Mario & Sonic (both Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics) are far more enjoyable in terms of gameplay and durability.

I wasn't expecting every event to be available but more selection would have made the game a little more bearable. I'm not asking for a full ice hockey set-up, as with NHL, but moguls, ski-cross, curling and a few other sports would have offered a level of variety.

At £26 from amazon, I thought this would be a bargain. Sadly, I still feel like I've overspent. A disappointing event.

After the disappointment that was Beijing 2008 (Xbox 360) I did not have high hopes for this, with me having reservations about the lack of consistency of one control method from one event to another (such as the method you might use to run). However, Vancouver 2010 is, I am pleased to report, a much better, more consistent, game.

There are various skiing events including downhill, slalom and giant slalom. You also have a ski-jumping option, two snowboarding events (which control very much like the skiing ones), two speed-skating events (one is longer than the other), and some chute events in the form of the luge, the skeleton (a bit like the luge, only you lie on your front on the sledge and face forward instead of lying on your back on it), and two-man bobsleigh.

There is some button-mashing to build up power, but this tends to only occur at the start of events, with the exception of one of the speed-skating events, so it's nowhere near as daunting as it was in Beijing 2008, and in many cases the controls from one event are very similar across the others. Also, some of the controls in Beijing 2008 were quite daunting and ridiculously hard (such as the judo event); no such problems in Vancouver 2010, where they're pretty straightforward and at least make sense!

Many events are done one at a time while in multiplayer offline, but on some occasions the screen splits. However, I would have preferred a horizontal split rather than a vertical one, as this reduces your lateral view a bit too much. Online is a different story, where you can get an idea of how well your opponents are doing by little ghost players showing how well they are doing in relation to you.

The graphics and sound are excellent, with some amazing scenery, and I love the way the imagery blurs as you pick up speed.

My only real gripe that I could find is that the computer-controlled opponents are quite tough to beat, particularly in the skiing events. A challenge is fine, but in some of the events they are perhaps a little too tough.

But Vancouver 2010 is a triumph in many ways. A sports-related game that does the job properly and is still a heck of a lot of fun, especially when you have human opponents.

Good fun! 15 Feb 2010

Having enjoyed playing Torino 2006, I was very much looking forward to playing this Winter Olympic game on Xbox 360. After my dissapointment to majority of fast button pressing gameplay on Beijing 2008, I was curious to see how SEGA would do with this one. and I have to say, they have done a great job in making this game!

First, graphics and sound in the game is absolutely fantastic. It is pretty much very accurate to the venues you see on tv and you do get the sense of being there... but only down side in terms of sound I would say is that there are no commentaries.- No big deal, but I think it would have added a little more authenticity to the game.

Secondly, this game is very easily accessable. What I mean by that is it's an easy going game and you can easily pick up and play with light headed.

Gameplay is also good fun as well, each sporting events providing you with different game experience. And you do find your self keep coming back for more, especially after watching some of the sporting events on tv.

However on the downside, I just feel that the game is lacking the depth. There is a practidce mode, challenge mode and an Olympic mode where you can compete for the medal but you don't even see the medal it self in the game, after you finish on top 3... In addition to this, I just wish there were more sporting events in the game. Especially something like moguls would have been fun and adding biathlon would have been nice too, which would have added more variety and depth to the game.

Despite the negatives I have just mentioned, this game is great fun and certainly different events keeps you entertained.
Must buy if you are a huge sports/olympics fan like myself and I highly recommend you to play this game during the Olympic season, where Olympic atmosphere and spirit is high which will make the game more enjoyable.
so, buy, play and go for gold!
