After the disappointment that was
Beijing 2008 (Xbox 360) I did not have high hopes for this, with me having reservations about the lack of consistency of one control method from one event to another (such as the method you might use to run). However, Vancouver 2010 is, I am pleased to report, a much better, more consistent, game.
There are various skiing events including downhill, slalom and giant slalom. You also have a ski-jumping option, two snowboarding events (which control very much like the skiing ones), two speed-skating events (one is longer than the other), and some chute events in the form of the luge, the skeleton (a bit like the luge, only you lie on your front on the sledge and face forward instead of lying on your back on it), and two-man bobsleigh.
There is some button-mashing to build up power, but this tends to only occur at the start of events, with the exception of one of the speed-skating events, so it's nowhere near as daunting as it was in Beijing 2008, and in many cases the controls from one event are very similar across the others. Also, some of the controls in Beijing 2008 were quite daunting and ridiculously hard (such as the judo event); no such problems in Vancouver 2010, where they're pretty straightforward and at least make sense!
Many events are done one at a time while in multiplayer offline, but on some occasions the screen splits. However, I would have preferred a horizontal split rather than a vertical one, as this reduces your lateral view a bit too much. Online is a different story, where you can get an idea of how well your opponents are doing by little ghost players showing how well they are doing in relation to you.
The graphics and sound are excellent, with some amazing scenery, and I love the way the imagery blurs as you pick up speed.
My only real gripe that I could find is that the computer-controlled opponents are quite tough to beat, particularly in the skiing events. A challenge is fine, but in some of the events they are perhaps a little too tough.
But Vancouver 2010 is a triumph in many ways. A sports-related game that does the job properly and is still a heck of a lot of fun, especially when you have human opponents.
