Sonic Heroes is basically the action segments from Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 stripped of all the insanely dull pseudo RPG elements but unfortunately still containing far too much storyline and the largest and least interesting host of secondary characters ever seen in gaming. Sonic Heroes also inherits many of the older titles' camera and control problems, although here they are now occasional rather than constant irritations.
All this may seem as if it's painting a rather poor picture of the game, but despite all its problems Sonic Heroes is actually a lot of fun. Its main gimmick is that you actually control three characters at a time, with each one having a special ability of either speed, flight or the ability to smash through blocks. Thankfully this doesn't overcomplicate the controls and instead adds a modicum of depth to the otherwise non-stop running-'n'-jumping action.
You still occasionally get the feeling that the game is trying too hard to fit a round peg in a square hole, but on balance more of it works than doesn't, and it's certainly the best Sonic title since the Mega Drive era. --David Jenkins
Using the three formations and the powerful moves that each team member has, Sonic and his friends combine forces to battle the ultimate evil: play as one of four teams for a total of 12 playable characters--Team Sonic, Team Dark, Team Rose or Team Chaotix, each with their signature moves and story line. Each team boasts multiple specialised stages with unique missions and CG movies driving each team story forward. You can experiment with team formations to learn the best way to defeat enemies, solve puzzles and navigate massive environments. Each stage contains multiple paths and missions for maximum replayability.

Sonic Heroes started life in the depths of Sonic Teams labs as as straight forward 3D platformer. People weren't drawn to the shooting and 'let's find the Master Emerald' sections of Sonic Adventure 2, so it seemed we were going to get a old style Sonic title. But I, and every other Sonic fan, knew that Sonic Team would come up with a new idea. A top-class gimmick that would blow us all away. And guess what! They have! Hurrah!
The twist with Sonic heroes is that you contol three characters, not just one. It's not as hard as it sounds. With a quick push of a button you can switch between which of the three characters you want to control. The other two tag along behind, destroying enimies and collecting golden rings as they go. But why three characters? It's an ingenious idea! Each character in the 'team' has a unique ability. For example, Sonic has light speed and is the only one who can run round a loop-de-loop without falling off half way. Tails can fly, and even carry his team mates. And Knuckles can smash the living cack out of things, such as previously unbreakable walls. See, I told you it was ingenious!
The game has four teams to choose from. The first is Team Sonic, which consists of Sonic (obviously), Tails, and Knuckles. Team Dark is made up from Shadow, Rouge, and a new robotic character named Gamma. Next up is Team Rose. This team is made up from Amy Rose, Cream, and Big. Finally, we have Team Chaotix. This is the team that I'm most looking forward to playing as, because we haven't seen these three characters since Knuckles' Chaotix on the Sega 32X. The characters in question are Vector, Espio, and Charmee Bee. To be honest, I would have rather seen Mighty than Charmee, but what can you do?!
The game's plot is standard Sonic stuff. Dr. Robotnik has gone nuts, and our heroes have to stop him. Again. There's a problem here though... At the end of Sonic Adventure 2, Robotnik becomes a good guy. Why's he gone crazy again is anyone's guess. Continuity is important. Tell Sonic Team that.
Anyway, the levels are massive and will keep you exploring for weeks. Just as an example Team Sonic's first stage is five times as big as Sonic's first stage in Sonic Adventure 2. Believe it! It's good to see that the classic 'find your own route through' system has been put to good use here. It was somewhat lacking in the previous 3D Sonic titles, and it's a good sign that it's present here. This means that the stages have ultimate replay attraction. Top stuff.
As far as the graphics go, they're identical to those in the previous 3D Sonic titles. So don't expect photo-realistic hedgehogs here. The sound is better though, as it's more rock 'n' roll and less 70's funk than the last outing.
It's worth noting that Sonic Heroes is due to be released on all three next-generation formats. Take it fom me, the Gamecube version is far by the best. After all it's the only console which has the GBA connectivity feature! Also, the Xbox and PS2 versions suffer with extreme slowdown. I'm hoping Sonic Team rectify this for the next Sonic title. I suppose it's because they've had alot of experience with the Gamecube, what with Billy Hatcher and soforth, and the Xbox and PS2 are like new territories. In a way, this is excusable. Yet in another way, why did they program a game when they knew they hadn't got time to get to grips with format first? Can you say 'rush job'? Or maybe even 'money grabbers'? Hmmm...
Overall, this rocks. Sega and Sonic Team have done us proud again. It's a great single player experience that'll keep you coming back for more. And I haven't even touched on the multiplayer modes yet. Excited? You damn well should be my friend...
It is a absolute must have for sonic fanatics (such as myself) with fast paced action and all the well loved characters.
Although being a great game though, it does let itself down in some ways, for me it was the ending which just didn’t cut it for me at all!
But other than that this is a great game, for all ages
