Graphically, Skies of Arcadia is surreal and stunning. Arcadia is a magical world where folks float through the air on giant airships. A young and lively air pirate named Vyse, who leads a swashbuckling troupe of pirates named the Blue Rogues, spends most of his time travelling from floating island to floating island. While touching down on the Valuan Empire one fateful day, Vyse and his sidekick Aika rescue a mysterious girl named Fina, who was captured while trying to find six magic crystals used to summon "Gigas," powerful ancient weapons. Naturally, the Valuans want the Gigas for their own malevolent political plans, so Vyse, Aika, and Fina set out to find the precious, scattered crystals and fight enemies (both human and inhuman) to keep the world safe from tyranny. In total, there are six huge lands to explore with many different kinds of environments, such as villages, dungeons, forests, and deserts, as well as otherworldly locations.
The turn-based combat system is effective, with more than 70 customisable weapons to use (based on different colours) and more than three dozen magic spells (and special attacks) as indicated by the game's "spirit bar" shown on the screen. The visuals during the fight scenes may cause your jaw to fall to the ground with its bright lights and mesmerising colours and textures.
Skies of Arcadia is a highly addictive, gorgeous, huge, and deep role-playing game worthy of your attention. Kudos to Sega for creating a breathtaking fantasy that will likely be a mainstay in Dreamcasts well into the spring. --Todd Mowatt

Best RPG on Dreamcast,
By A Customer
This review is from: Skies of Arcadia (Dreamcast) (Video Game)
Skies of Arcadia has always been one I've waited for because of it's incredible visuals. Thankfully, though, the gameplay is just as impressive. The fights aren't as interactive as the ones in Grandia 2 or the Final Fantasy series, but the ship battles are a nice touch and the magic and super moves are stunning. The characters are great - they may not develop much but they are colourful, lively and often they make the cut scenes pretty funny. The story is basic compared to... again, FF, but it's interesting enough to keep you playing and has a few neat touchs. The music is good, but sadly there's no proper voice acting and the voice acting that IS there is just unnecessary and sometimes laughably bad. I don't understand everyone's complaint about the random battles - they aren't honestly that bad, and if they really bug you... RUN AWAY! On the whole this is a fully enjoyable experience, and with the crew members and discoveries to collect has some good replay value too.

Skies of Arcadia ...true magic in a game,
By A Customer
This review is from: Skies of Arcadia (Dreamcast) (Video Game)
What can I say that has not already been said? This is an awesome game. Beautiful, funny, tragic {but not too much}, the classic rpg style ..you start small and get bigger and bigger, but it is not inevitable. You have to make decisions that effect the game. And they do. I loved this game not just for the gameplay, which is excellent, or the story, which is deeply engaging, or for the characters who are charmingly real and human, but for the feeling of hope that pervades the story.

Buy a Dreamcast. Then buy this.,
This review is from: Skies of Arcadia (Dreamcast) (Video Game)
Really quite staggeringly good. Graphics, yeah, great; sound, atmospheric; but plot-wise...One of the things I liked most about the game was the way it sets up a fairly simple 'collect the crystals' plot then, just when it seems it's starting to become predictable, it pulls the rug from under you. Then it does it again. And again. It ain't Tolstoy, but it sucks you in and won't let you go. And it makes a refreshing change to come across a game that, rather than guiding you through the game mechanics gradually in a prologue, forces you to get used to the fighting system by throwing an indestructible-seeming boss at you within the first twenty minutes of playing. SoA is full of surprising touches. Perhaps the oft-mentioned random battles are a little tedious in places, but the frequency of them seems to ease up as the game develops. And you really need to build up your stats if you are going to take on some of the later bosses. In short, buy the game. And if you don't own a DC, buy one to play it on.
