Amazon.co.uk Review

Rez is a stylish blend of the film Tron and the arcade classic Space Harrier. Your character continually flies forward while being attacked by a barrage of enemies that can be despatched by targeting them and unleashing guided laser beams. Each explosion triggers a sound--destroy a chain of up to eight and the resulting notes blend seamlessly with the background music. The sedate pace soon picks up, making the game a constant riot of light and sound.

Graphically, Rez is gorgeous. Wire-frame cities, valleys and pyramids rise up as you pass and colours melt all over the screen as you dispose of your opponents. End of level bosses are ingeniously designed and jaw-dropping. Blue power-ups can help evolve your character from the simple humanoid you begin with to various more sophisticated forms--too many hits though and you regress to a basic spheroid shape. Red power ups fill up your overdrive gauge (smart-bomb to you and me), which will eliminate everything on screen. Another nice touch is added by the synchronisation of the thumping techno beats of the soundtrack with the rumbling of the controller.

Rez isn't going to be to everyone's taste: it may be too abstract and the action may be too relaxed for some. There are only five levels but you can unlock a myriad of different modes, views and colours to enhance a game that despite being short is certainly not short of replay value. It is as superb to watch as it is to play. --Jonathan Winter

Product Description

Rez, the action shooter brought to you by Tetsuya Mizuguchi (the talent behind Space Channel 5 and Sega Rally), is a fast-moving, wire-frame adventure backed by industrial beats. The story of Rez takes you deep into the world's computer network, which has recently been updated to handle the overload of information brought by the rapid expansion of the information age. The core of the new network is known as Eden, an extremely advanced artificial intelligence. But problems begin when Eden becomes self-aware and suffers a breakdown. You must take control of the network while you maniacally search for Eden to bring it back online. The network was built to keep intruders out at all costs, so you'll have to fight off enemies from all sides. To reach the system's core, you'll need to shoot your way through each area and take out its specific firewall (boss) to wipe out that part of the system. By hacking the system, you'll alter the visual output and even take over the music, creating your own rhythms and eye-candy as you dig deeper into the dream-like cyber world.

5.0 out of 5 stars A game that lives up to the hype, 2 Jun 2005

There is a strange species of videogame that do well in reviews but dont sell much. After a while they become 'cult-classics' as people discover just how good they are. Often the slow buring hype that surrounds such 'late bloomers' is unjustified. A good example of this is Ico on the PS2 - I bought this game after continual mention in a well respected games magazine and was very dissapointed with it's unoriginal and dull gameplay. Another such game is Rez, except Rez lives up to and beyond the hype - it really is very good indeed.

I wont describe it's mechanincs or theme as this has been done by other reviewers but I will say that if you are looking for an original game able to relax or excite depending on your mood and like electronic music then this is the one for you. It really is a very well designed and implemented game.

PS - The last level has Adam Freelands track 'Fear' which has just made it out on the new Freeland album 'Now and Them' - 3 years after it previewed in rez - it's a great track and suits the game well and his album is great as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rez - Sega do it again & break the mould with originality, 15 Jan 2002

Amazing! This game arrived yesterday in the post, and I'm hooked. On a widescreen TV & through a prologic receiver, this game kicks. OK, so its simple - lock on & fire (but Virtua Tennis isnt difficult to pick up & what a classic that is!) but I'm hooked. As the game progresses, the beat picks up, the vibration pack starts to 'rock' and you become totally immersed in a virtual world of light & sound. The only reason this gets 4 stars is that game longevity may be short lived.

Well done Sega. Let the DC retire with style & original gameplay (yet again), and may PS2 owners be grateful the title is heading their way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Innovation and originality at its best!, 14 Jan 2002

I got this game not knowing what to expect, and I thought maybe this will be no good. But I was nicely surprised after first starting the game. The graphics are sharp and crisp, loads of colours and the frame rate never seems to drop. At first I noticed the graphics the graphics took on a kind of wire frame effect but after playing it for a while they show something different and beautiful. The game play is amazing a real pick up and play sort of game. The sound is brilliantly mix with the action when you hit or lock on to something with your weapon it produces a sound, which mixes in with the ongoing song tracks. This game aims to do something different, it tries and succeeds in stimulating you visually and via sound. It really is one of the most original games I've ever played, mind you what do you expect from sega.

The game its self is quit hard especially the end of level bosses of which look superb. But as said in a previous review it is quite easy to play through it and complete it. But it's a lot more difficult to play through it and get 100% of enemies shot down and 100% of all the goals completed. This is when you start to get engrossed and start searching for secrets and extra's, and believe me when I say there are loads of extra's in this game. I've found 1 extra level and a few others so far but there are still so many more to find.

I would recommend this game to some one who is after something original and totally crazy, but addictive. Anyone who enjoyed jet set radio or something like space channel 5 should get this game its. And even if you have your doubts about rez then rent it first but you won't be disappointed.
