Amazon.co.uk Review

Daytona USA 2001 is taken from the hugely successful arcade game of the same name, and the chances are you'll already have seen this game a thousand times before as you've walked past any seaside video arcade. Tracks have been taken from the original and the Sega Saturn version, and there are also new tracks that are exclusive to the Dreamcast. The range of cars that you can customise via differences in grip, acceleration, and maximum speed help you get around these great courses.

The game is broken up into single player race mode, championship mode, time trail and, of course, multiplayer. Once in the game, you get to race against 40 other cars. As you'd expect, controls are fairly simple, and although the analogue pad is a touch sensitive, you'll soon be power-sliding around those corners in no time. Even though a steering wheel isn't necessary by any means, it elevates the entire experience to a near-godly level of arcade perfection.

Longevity-wise this game holds plenty of options: the multiple tracks can all be varied in length and direction, and the game also holds secrets, with more cars available as you play your way through the championship mode. Graphics are of the usual ilk for the Dreamcast and you'd be mistaken for thinking that once again you're in the arcade shoving your pound coins in the slot.

If you're looking for harmless car racing on a track without having the worries that perhaps MSR's cities or F355's realism present, then get on your marks, get set, GO! --Jason Denwood

Product Description

There are two types of racing games: one for gear-heads who know the difference between double A-arm and panhard rod suspensions, and one for the rest of us who know the difference between gas and brake. If you're in the latter group, listen up, because one of the highest grossing arcade racers of all time, Daytona USA, has come to Dreamcast. You can go head-to-head in two-player split-screen mode, or download other players' driving record and data in the form of a ghost car against which you can develop your racing strategy before uploading your own best times.

5.0 out of 5 stars daytona, 8 Jun 2004

Amazing game this.
I recently took the plunge into dreamcast territory (again)along with Daytona + ferrari wheel.
This game is pure, distilled fun, it practically screams at you to get better, its a true sega great...and get this, EVEN BETTER THAN ARCADE SHOCKER!! true, its all true, the graphics are astounding even standing up to ps2 visuals (considering this is an obsolete console) deserves my utmost admiration for am2's sterling work on the conversion.
The handling on a standard pad is very disorienting at first, but an hour down the line your cutting up and powersliding with the best of em, (on the first track that is).
Be prepared to spend a while learning the other tracks nuances
as they can be tricky to learn, but again this is a good thing, it all adds to the longevity.
I bought a saturn many moons ago simply so I could play Daytona, that too had all the playability but fell waaay short of the arcades class visuals, well dreamcast owners are at last able to get the version EVERY arcade fan has been dying for.
Simply put, if you love the arcade original, you will love this !!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Its Daytona for pete's sake!, 16 May 2001

After buying a dreamcast at Christmas I was beginning to wonder why I had bought one. Then this game comes out. Wow it is so fun, what other racing game lets you put forty cars on one track? You really can just pick it up and play it.. and with a vibration pack it feels great. a very good arcade conversion with extras for the home version, but not quite enough. You would at least expect online racing and the season mode is a bit scrubby but then we can't have everything...maybe Daytona 2002 will, but in the meantime...

3.0 out of 5 stars A badly flawed game that shouldn't be, 13 Oct 2010

THIS GAME IS VGA COMPATABLE

Daytona usa 2001 is quite an impressive game on the box and very impressive when you look at the game seeing the dreamcasts power to deliver the arcade style graphics of the tracks and cars but unfortunately thats all ,the minute you start playing the game's championship mode it gets very boring because of the poor handling and ridiculous difficulty ,when you scuff a corner or even touch a blade of grass not 1 car will pass you instead about 6 pass you and it's difficult to get back into the race as the cpu cars just pull away (how i don't know) ,the 3 seven speedway is the ONLY track you will get away with scuffing the corners as for the rest of the tracks forget about it.

Also when looking at the circuit map in championship mode you see the 1st place car pulling away even quicker you'll just say to yourself "whatever" ,the difficulty in this game is just terrible and to me it's just unenjoyable even the easy difficulty is like extreme ,iv tried for many hours and days on different tyre types and it's almost impossible controlling the cars to get them to turn the deep corners without touching the grass or going on the grass all the way to the wall.

If you wan't to check out this game then it has ...

Single race - race as one of the 4 cars (hornet ,grasshopper ,falcon and lightning ,there are also unlockable cars) and race on one of the following tracks

3 seven speedway (easy)
Dinosaur canyon (extreme)
Sea side street galaxy (extreme)
Desert city (extreme)
National park speedway (extreme)
Circuit pixie (extreme)
Rin rin rink (extreme)
Mermaid lake (extreme)

All of the tracks with extreme which is almost all of them are extremely difficult to obtain 1st place and even 10th place which is just pathetic ,you can also change your tyre setup from soft ,medium soft ,medium ,medium hard and hard ,you can also race up to 40 laps or below that and race with up to 40 cars or below that ,all tracks are also reverse ,mirror and mirror reverse.

Championship mode - As i don't know much about this mode due to it being totally unenjoyable you have the challengers cup event with 4 races and you have to place 5th or higher (there may be more events if you can somehow win this one) ,you get the car select option for every race which means you don't have to stick to the same car after every race.

Time attack - Try to get the fastest time on each circuit in 8 laps or go around the circuit on a free run.

Vs battle - 2 player battle.

Records - Check all the current times for all the tracks.

Replay - View any replays of any of your races you have saved to your virtual memory unit (vmu).

Options - Ajust the game configurations ,ajust your steering ,accelerator and brakes on the controller ,customize your cars with 3 different coloured paint jobs all which can be used in any game mode ,adjust the games screen and save and load your gameplay.

Homepage - Internet access.

Overall this game may appeal to some people but not to me ,what is the point of a game having great jawdropping graphics if it's unplayable ,the daytona 2 arcade machine was better to play than this ,the difficulty was hard but not as extreme as this game.
