Product Description

Product Description

Now in its 7th printing since republication in 1997, the Sefer Yetzirah has established itself as a primary source for all serious students of Kabbalah. Rabbi Kaplan's translation of this oldest and most mysterious of all Kabbalistic texts provides a unique perspective on the meditative and magical aspects of Kabbalah. He expounds on the dynamics of the spiritual domain, the worlds of Sefirot, souls and angels. This translation is based on Gra version of the Sefer Yetzirah and includes the author's extraordinary commentary on all its mystical aspects including kabbalistic astrology, Ezekiel's vision and the 231 gates. Also included are three alternative versions to make this volume the most complete work on the Sefer Yetzirah available in English.

About the Author

Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan was born in New York City and was educated in the Torah Voda'as and Mir Yeshivot in Brooklyn. After years of study at Jerusalem's Mir Yeshiva, he was ordained by some of Israel's foremost rabbinic authorities. He also earned a master's degree in physics and was listed in Who's Who in Physics in the United States. In the course of a writing career spanning only 12 years, Rabbi Kaplan earned a reputation as one of the most effective, persuasive, scholarly, and prolific exponents of Judaism in the English language. He died on January 28, 1983, at the age of 48. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I am amazed by the ability of Rabbi Kaplan to teach the Mystical principles of Judaism with such clarity. When I pick this commentary up I want to read it through in one go but always find myself meditating on a small section. His teachings indeed fit the principle that 'what is to be revealed is at first hidden'.

I began with Path of the Kabbalah by David Sheinkin, M.D. and was led to this book through that text. I knew absolutely nothing about Judaisn and the Kaballah and Sheinkin's book was the first place to start. I immediately had to get my hands on the real books of mystical Kabbalah. Kaplan's writing is outstanding. The repetition of information while new pieces are layered, more repetition, more layers is very effective. Then move on to Meditations and the Bible and/or Meditations and the Kabbalah, and the Zohar. Sheinkin's book mentions key writers such as Kaplan and Scholem, though the later is very critical and academic rather than accessible and ready to put into practice.

Rabbi Kaplan, Z"L, makes a great insight on this short, but extremely deep book. He uses his knowledge in physics to make us approach to such a very ancient text in today's language. Basically a meditative text, Kaplan suggests its basic applications as well as an insight on how to make a Golem. Anyway, as he states elsewhere in this, and his other titles, all these practices should be treated with maturity and some respect (if you don't believe in this stuff's truth, just skip that), for you can get psychologically or spiritually damaged. Absolutely recommendable.
