Product Description

Book Description

The fifth book of the Belgariad.

Product Description

Now in the final stages of their quest for his son, Garion and his companions travel to Kell to consult the only undamaged copy of the Malloreon Gospels. For centuries the Seers have guarded this book from the Grolims and even had their wizards put a curse of blindness on any Grolim who tried to enter Kell.

So, as proclaimed in Guardians of the West, Belgarion the Godslayer sets out with those who must join him: the Eternal Man, the Guide, the Man with Two Lives, the Bearer of the Orb and the Silent Man, and the rest of his companions to The Place Which Is No More to make the final choice - darkness or light.

But Zandramas the Sorceress will not be outdone. Though she may not enter Kell she still has young Geran and should she reach the final meeting place with him, then Garion must slay his son or the world will be no more.

THUS ENDS THE EPIC STORY OF THE MALLOREON

I found this book a fitting end to both the series which chart the progress of Garion from boyhood to his destiny. In response to the adverse comments I have heard / read, I would like to point out that by the time you reached the start of this book, you have already read 9 books, so something genuine must have kept you reading till the end.

If you read the first book of the Belgariad, you have a pretty good idea of the style and content of the other 9 books. This isn't a negative comment, just a reassurance that the same attention to detail remains throughout both series.
As a "final" book, the Seeress of Kell draws together all the loose ends in a way which makes you marvel that someone could keep a plot going (with all the new developments) over the years which it took David (and Leigh Eddings) to write the series.
For people who have only just come to this series and loved it, spare a thought for those of us who had to wait for several years between the publishing of the Seeress of Kell and the Prequels "Belgarath, the sorcerer" and ultimately "Polgara"!

The only negative criticism I would raise (and it applies more to the prequel novels than this)is that for a fantasy series set in an imaged world the speech is far too American!

If being a well-paced, descriptive, and full (but uncluttered) novel makes it childish, then I will happily turn my attention to the children's corner in future!

A masterpiece 1 Aug 2000
Format:Paperback
A word of caution: If you don't have time to read the entire saga, then don't buy this book!

The entire saga is a Masterpiece in fantasy-writing. To be compared with Tolkiens Lord of the Rings. This a must for all fantasy-lovers.

Eddings writes with style and humour. A true Master.

This is the fifth and final book in the Malloreon (after Guardians of the West, King of the Murgos, Demon Lord of Karanda and Sorceress of Darshiva).

In this volume, the heroes first make their way to Kell and the place of the Seers to learn the location of the Place Which Is No More, where the final meeting between Garion and Zandramas must take place.

They then sail to the Island of Perivor and its very Arendish society, and finally to the Turim Reef in the middle of the Sea of the East.

I found this final volume rather anticlimactic. Even though Zandramas does everything to hinder Garion and his friends, trying to prevent them from reaching the appointed place at the appointed time, I knew (and not only because I've already read these books) that the Prophecy that's been dictating their lives and the destiny of the world for eons would get them there eventually, so I wasn't even worried about the outcome. The final chapters were a little too mushy for my liking too.
