Review

Adam Ford's Seeking Silence in a Noisy World: The art of mindful solitude is beautifully produced and engaging, and well worth its price. The author, who once was young but who now is not so young, gives us the wisdom of a life's experience of exploring silence in a variety of situations and contexts. Throughout his ministry - as a priest running boisterous youth clubs, as a school chaplain, as a priest in ordinary - he has taken up opportunities for silence. Now, in retirement, he shares with us the fruits of his exploration. The book is a gentle perambulation around a strong centre. Each of the chapters takes the reader a little deeper. They cover a wide range of both core and peripheral issues. Each sounds true to personal experience. Mistakes and pitfalls are not ignored. His own "stumbling journey" forms the shape of the book, which ends with his acknowledgement that the natural world helps him most of all. But this does not mean that he ignores or excludes experiences learned from Christians and, indeed, those of other faiths. He writes of retreats, of "extreme silence" such as is found in some monastic communities, of "the dark side of silence", and of "handling noise". It is an easy book to "speed-read", but this would do it less than justice. He writes ecumenically - interfaith, indeed - and tells many expressive stories from his experience and travels. (And he is a well-travelled man.) He deals with thorny issues: the challenges, the pitfalls, and the evil, for instance, that can arise as a consequence of seeking solitude and silence. There is a wide-ranging bibliography at the end of the book. I must appreciated reading it, and gladly commend it. --Church Times 30th Dec 2011

Simply perusing the pages of Adam Ford's beguiling book brings a degree of peace. The idea of seeking solace in silence is age-old, but the need for it today in our busy, boisterous world has never been greater, and Ford's focus on finding simple ways to savour moments of silence, whether to heal, inspire or refresh is universally welcome. Filtered through his own diverse experiences and filled with wry humour, he explores the many different types of silence, from that afforded by going on retreat, learning meditation, or immersing one-self in Nature, and a whole host of other possibilities, all designed to offer invaluable time for reflection. --The Good Book Guide Dec 2011

Format: Hardcover
Adam Ford's quietly resonant book examines the different facets of silence and champions its place in our busy, distraction-filled lives. Part memoir, part spiritual guidance, he draws on a lifetime of experiences, both dark and light, to paint a thoughtfully subtle portrait. Ford's prose is elegant and straightforward, his touch both light and exceedingly profound. His view of nature as an aide to spiritual development echoes the thoughts of, among others, Goethe, Ruskin and Thoreau. A beautiful and peaceful book that feels like a drink of cool, reviving water in clamorous times.

When I read this book what struck a chord was how true it was. We live in this hustle-bustle of city life and we never take time to appreciate our surroundings and how they can become an escape and are not just the problem. It's all about taking time to consider how we can make peace out of noise and solitude out of multitude. So simple yet so true and Adam Ford writes wisely and humbly. Couldn't ask for more - captivating read...

to follow another's journey is no bad thing, this is a short light reading pathway and lack of too great a challenge is also sometimes no bad thing
