5.0 out of 5 stars A true gem and reveals a lot about human nature 16 Oct 2012
Format:Blu-ray
I originally thought that this was a comedy. There are one or two scenes which contain black comedy, but it's more about human feelings and the way we deal with other people in times of crisis.

The plot is that life as we known it is coming to an end. There is no escape, we are all going to die. How would you deal with it?

I won't spoil what is a brillant peice of cinema and by the end you truly relate to the characters as doom approaches.

Wonderful film. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Film 19 July 2012
Format:DVD
This film is a comedy/drama about the road trip taken by an insurance agent and his much younger neighbour to reunite him with his first love before the world ends (the Armageddon/Deep Impact heroics haven't succeeded and that asteroid is going to hit us). He takes the dog that had recently been dumped on him, and she takes her favourite l.p's and off they go, getting into scrapes and adventures on the way. The l.p's are a very important part of the story as they provide the soundtrack to their journey, to be honest they made the film. The scene where Herb Alpert's This Guys In Love With You plays in the background brought as lump to my throat.
It has some great funny moments as well, the dinner party scene especially is hilarious.
I must admit I've never been a huge fan of either Steve Carrell or Keira Knightley but both are excellent in this enchanting story.
When we first saw the trailer we thought this would be worth a watch, it was a great feeling to come out of the cinema totally surprised by how much we loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very, very different and very, very enjoyable. 12 Dec 2012
Format:DVD
At last a part that really suits Keira Knightly - flaky home-counties girl abroad. Steve Carrell is superb playing the part he always plays - confused male: he may be a somewhat limited actor but what he can do he does well.

I just love the premise that nobody really knows what to do as the end of the world approaches: thus, the film gives the whole range from aggressive mayhem and kindness, murder and sacrifice , suicide and optimism, orgies of sex/drugs and sensible selfless behaviour, humanity and evil etc, etc. There are those whom just give up and those who carry on as usual as if nothing will happen and every range in between. I wonder if my lawn will be neatly mown when Armageddon strikes?

It is, however, a film that will have its detractors and will be intensely disliked by those who judge their films solely on violence and action. This is expected and not a criticism of the film and it is not an action movie.

Not a bad film, not really. How much you engage with it depends on what you think of the characters. Personally, I didn't like them. They are either hipster/pixie girl screen stereotypes or bores; add to that a selection of lines that no one in their right mind would come out with. Pity, both Carrell and Knightley are very good. There's also an air of inevitability, not just in that end of the world bit, more in the glaring inevitability that this will devolve into any other relationship film only with an unusual framing device. Funny, intriguing and chaotic when it wants to be, if only it was a little more brave.

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredille movie whch took me by surprise 11 Nov 2012
Format:DVD
I thought this would be a comedy, and whilst a few scenes this genuinely surprised me by being one of the most moving films I've watched in a long time. Both performances had such vulnerability and emotion and lead me to be really moved by the end of it and grateful to have seen this movie. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars What really matters at the end of the world 28 Oct 2012
By L. Power TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Seeking a Friend for the end of the World was written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, who wrote Nick and Norah's Infinite playlist, which I vaguely remember as a dorky coming of age movie with surreal overtones. This is her first directing venture.

The end of the world has become a common theme in recent years sometimes post apocalytic such as The The Book of Eli [DVD] with Denzel Washington, or pre apocalyptic such as Von Trier's Melancholia, Emmerich's blockbuster 2012, an action movie on a grand scale, or my personal favorite Another Earth (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)[Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy]in which another earth appears in the night sky but may not be apocalyptic at all.

A news announcement of terrifying proportions sets in course a sequence of events in the life of Peterson Dodge played by Steve Carell. His wife leaves him immediately. Peoples behavior changes. He meets Keira Knightley's character, somewhat of a free spirit.

Both initially have plans which do not include each other. He wants to reconnect with a high school sweetheart, and she wants to go back to her family, except the airlines are shut down.

Yet, as time goes by and they help each other to get what they really want, they realise they both want the same thing, and that thing is closer than they realised.

To tell you more would be unfair. SFEW has good and weak points. It's engaging enough and I think could have been better.
