Very disappointing,

This review is from: Seeking The Dead: A Joe Plantagenet Murder Mystery: Book 1 (Joe Plantagenet Series) (Paperback)
This is the first book I've read by Kate Ellis and, given the good reviews she's received for earlier novels, this was a considerable disappointment. There were no well-drawn characters, not even the main one, Joe Plantagenet. As a consequence, there is no tension to speak of and the plot, such as it is, simply meanders along with the reader largely disengaged. The novel lacks polish. If the author had given the manuscript a careful read through, she might have done something about the repetitions, clumsy sentence construction, laboured descriptions and unnecessary explanations. There were also details of interviews with one or two borderline characters that led nowhere and should have been reduced to a single line, if mentioned at all. Were there no editors employed on this one? For me, the story was boring most of the time, with nothing to draw the reader in and no real atmosphere. And in the end, I didn't care whodunit.

This review is from: Seeking The Dead: A Joe Plantagenet Murder Mystery: Book 1 (Joe Plantagenet Series) (Paperback)
This is an excellent start to a new series featuring DI Joe Plantagenet and the northern city of Eborby - based on York. A serial killer - dubbed the Resurrection Man for his habit of leaving the naked bodies of his victims in churchyards - is on the loose. Carmel has just started a new job in the Archaeology Centre and is living in a rented flat with an uneasy atmosphere. The previous tenant has disappeared leaving unpaid rent but threatening messages are still being left on the answering machine. Carmel reluctantly contacts Joe - who was a family friend when they lived in Liverpool. Could there be a link with the Resurrection Man? There are supernatural and black magic elements to this story which keep you reading and the climax is hair raising. The writing is economical and to the point and the plot is fast paced. There is enough personal information about the detectives involved to make you want to read the next in the series - due out in 2009 - and I for one am looking forward to it.

The Joe Plantagenet stories are off to a great start. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, read every word didn't get tired. The story is easy to read, flows well, no overly long descriptions. Give it a go!
