I'm in the minority here I know, but I can't understand the rapturous applause that other reviewers have given this novel. I found it to be lacking in depth, characterisation and any form of suspense. We have the interchangeable "DI Joe Plantagenet" standing in for the interchangable "DI Wesley Peterson" as our hero in this series, another poorly fleshed out character that I just cannot relate to.

In an attempt to be constructive here, Kate Ellis desperately needs to find a decent editor to shape and polish her work. The amount of repetitive phrases and redundant characters stack up and are really annoying.

Perhaps if she could focus on developing her characters and abandoning this constant need to have a story from the past as a sub plot device, she might turn out something interesting.

This is an excellent start to a new series featuring DI Joe Plantagenet and the northern city of Eborby - based on York. A serial killer - dubbed the Resurrection Man for his habit of leaving the naked bodies of his victims in churchyards - is on the loose. Carmel has just started a new job in the Archaeology Centre and is living in a rented flat with an uneasy atmosphere. The previous tenant has disappeared leaving unpaid rent but threatening messages are still being left on the answering machine. Carmel reluctantly contacts Joe - who was a family friend when they lived in Liverpool. Could there be a link with the Resurrection Man? There are supernatural and black magic elements to this story which keep you reading and the climax is hair raising. The writing is economical and to the point and the plot is fast paced. There is enough personal information about the detectives involved to make you want to read the next in the series - due out in 2009 - and I for one am looking forward to it.

I bought this book as I like murder mysteries and I live near York where this book is obviously set. I was a bit disappointed mainly becasue the subject of the book is not of much interest to me. I also thought the renaming of York and the streets a bit pointless, although Kate Ellis obviously knows York really well. I followed her footsteps and those of the characters and knew exactly where in York the action was taking place. I would read another of Kate Ellis's books.

Very disappointing
This is the first book I've read by Kate Ellis and, given the good reviews she's received for earlier novels, this was a considerable disappointment. Read more
