Book Description

Seize this opportunity to look more deeply into the narrative themes, symbols and mythic elements encountered in the Harry Potter books. Drawing from diverse spiritual and scholarly sources, The Seeker's Guide to Harry Potter offers seekers of all kinds an open-minded guide to the rich layers of meaning and symbolism we encounter in all seven of the novels.

Product Description

Review

The Seeker's Guide is aptly named. The questing reader will find an extraordinary range of insights into the deeper meanings and thematic substrata of the Harry Potter books that illuminate the magnitude of JK Rowling's achievement in responding to the spiritual void of our times. The underlying message is our alchemical capacity for transformative action, the triumph of love over fear and death, the transcendence of petty concerns and limiting beliefs. The author brilliantly illuminates the ambiguities of the human situation depicted in the novels as well as our ultimate ability to reconcile the polarities in our lives. --David Lorimer, Scientific & Medical Network

Dr. Geo Trevarthen has produced what I have to call a magical work -- scholarly but not boring, spiritual but not restricting, enlightening without being stuffy; in short, a rewarding read for anyone who may have wondered what was behind the Harry Potter phenomenon and why it reaches so deeply into our core beings. I urge you to shout, "Accio The Seeker's Guide to Harry Potter" ... I guarantee you a mind and heart opening experience awaits.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spiritual and Wise 15 Aug. 2008
Format:Paperback
I approached this book with some trepidation wondering if it would be stretching its themes of philosophy, psychology, symbols and mythical aspects a bit thin but it soon becomes clear that there's plenty for Dr Trevarthen to work with. She's done an excellent job at revealing dozens of aspects of the Harry Potter books which are both subtle and powerful aspects to the plot and character development but which are almost totally invisible unless you are looking for them.
Whether or not J. K. Rowing intended this underlying depth or not (and this book is respectful in not speculating) it becomes more and more obvious that either Rowling knows a great deal more about myth, alchemy and what Joseph Campbell called 'The Hero's Journey' than she has previously let on.
I'd recommend it to any Potter enthusiast with a smidgeon of interest in spirituality or the occult - if nothing else, it will inspire you to want to read ALL the books again to find the references and understand what appears to be happening at a deeper level.

4.0 out of 5 stars The seeker's guide to Harry Potter 5 Oct. 2008
Format:Paperback
This is a really good read: both deeply informed but fun. Geo Trevarthen has revealed that much of Harry Potter's magical world is also to be found in shamanic traditions (which I always suspected). The appeal of the books and films must surely be partly due to a half-buried sense that yes, given the right conditions, magic could really work - and yes, shamanic practitioners did and still do it!

couldn't fault this book . informative. precise . fun. wonderful writer who explains but doesn't preach. she leaves us to have our own opinions on what Jk Rowlings may or may not have meant. explores underlying majick and archetypes and offers us her opinions. not really a children's book unless young adult though as some of the psychology etc would need intellect and understanding of a certain level.as an adult HP fan I enjoyed it very much.

HAVING ONLY JUST WATCHED ALL MY DVDS OF THE MOVIES, PLUS SPECIAL FEATURES, I RE-READ THIS BOOK. AS I HAD WATCHED ALL OF THE FILMS ON T.V. BEFORE SEEING THE LAST ONE AT THE CINEMA A FEW YEARS AGO - I WAS ONLY JUST READY TO WATCH THEM ALL AGAIN, AND 'BACK TO SCHOOL TIME' IS THE PERFECT ATMOSPHERE TO REVISIT HOGWARTS! THIS IS A VERY INTERESTING, INSIGHTFUL BOOK ON THE DEEPER ASPECTS OF JK ROWLING'S WRITING.
