"On Monday morning, William went with Mum to play school for the first time." But when he gets there, William doesn't feel like joining in with the painting or the games so Mum stays with him. Then on Tuesday, Mum and William notice another little boy who also needs a bit of encouragement. Gradually, as William and David's friendship develops, their confidence does too and on Friday when the sun comes out, both boys are able to say good bye to their mums and go out to play.

When my son started nursery he had great difficulty in saying goodbye and would cry and cling terribly. My son is called William and looks very like the William in this book. He loved it and wanted me to read it to him over and over again, and even took it to bed to look at. The following day when it was time to leave him he turned to me and said "see you later mum" just like William in the book. This lovely book helped him find the courage to cope with a difficult transition. The illustrations are sensitive and the story is exactly right.

This is a good book. It follows a little boy who is starting nursery school for the first time. Each day he goes into the classroom with his Mum and she gently suggests that she'll go and he asks "can you stay?" which she does. By Friday, he has made a friend who is also settling in and happily goes off with him, waving his mother goodbye. I guess it would be a good book for that first week of nursery where you can stay with your child for extended periods. I had bought the book as my two were going through a sticky patch, finding it hard to separate. "Staying" wasn't really an option for me, so the story in the book didn't really fit for us. Nonetheless, they have enjoyed the book and it has allowed us to talk about difficult feelings and how they can be managed.

Bought this for my grandson who was NOT keen to go to nursery. He loved the book and is settling well now.
