Are you scared of the dark . . . ?

You will be.
See Jack Die
(See Jack Die #1, Best Sellers in Amazon Kindle eBooks)
by Nicholas Black

Jack Pagan might as well be 4½ months old. He awoke in a hospital after suffering a head injury that left him dead for over 67 minutes. All of his longterm memories were destroyed. Now he has to start his life again. But his accidental flirt with death left him a special gift. In those few minutes as he fades off to sleep each night, and in those early hours of the morning as he numbly awakens... he sees them.

At first, the shadows would just stretch into strange shapes and forms. Jack thought that he was hallucinating. That his medication was playing with his vision. Then the strange shadows began to walk around, moving freely. Jack chalked it up to a brain tumor. Some disease in his cerebral cortex. Schizophrenia, even. Something he could live with.

Now these creatures are not only haunting his nights, but his days. And they have a tendency to show themselves around people who are about to die. Seeking help he turns to a psychic who gives him a very special book. A book that he was destined to find. Jack learns that the only way he will ever know about who he was, is to face his worst fears, and die . . . again.

In a series of incredible twists and turns, Jack finds out that the worlds of the living and of the dead are much closer than any of us can possibly imagine. And monsters . . . are real.

A little bit of Horror, some suspense, a lot of paranormal, and even a bit of romance . . .

See Jack Die.

About the Author

Controversial novelist Nicholas Black is the author of several fiction and non-fiction works. As a security consultant in Mexico, Central America, Spain, France, and Northern Africa, he also served in the coveted French Foreign Legion while he was on the run from the Federal Government for refusing to cooperate with a murder investigation. At one time, Mr. Black was alleged by the US Federal Government to be an "arms trafficker," as well as a member of a group of men who, "...carried out contract killings." There are many far-fetched and fancy rumors surrounding Mr. Black's past. He now trains and fights in Mixed-Martial Arts. As an expert in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, and other combative tactics, he trains both professional fighters, security teams, and law enforcement in the art of armed and unarmed combat/unconventional warfare. Whenever he isn't throwing punches, he's probably working on his next novel. You can find him floating around Los Angeles or Las Vegas on the weekends. More About the Author

My name is Nicholas Black.

I'm a former member of the US NAVY, and the French Foreign Legion. I have fought professionally in the MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and have won two world titles in the process. I've done stunts with Chuck Norris (Walker: Texas Ranger), defused explosives, hit targets at +1,000 meters, made America's Most Wanted list, worked with "Freeway" Ricky Ross, co-written with Jimmy DaSaint, and met the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

* Regardless of rumors to the contrary: I did NOT stab the president of Paraguay in the neck with a fork. That whole affair was blown way out of proportion. And I deny every being a part of any dictator(s) being overthrown in Central Africa, and South America.

I've written about 10 books, most of them while on the run from the US Government. Perhaps I should back up:

I used to be a professional bodyguard. Some of my clients were the fancy, Hollywood type; and others were the East Coast Mobster kind. One of my clients, in particular, was a former Hitman, and hired me after he had put his assassination days behind him . . . or so I believed.

The US Government took me, along with the other bodyguards, into custody, asking if we had knowledge of our Boss's previous hits. We said, "No," and immediately all lawyered up. After we were released on bond I met with the other bodyguards and informed them that I was leaving the country.

2 days later I was gone.

Several months later I ended up in Paris, signing a contract with the French Foreign Legion. I trained in everything from Interrogation, to Diving, to Small unit Counter-terrorism tactics. I learned French, Spanish, Russian, and Arabic in the process.

. . . Oh, and I also learned how much money there was to be made in the Mercenary Trade.

Anyway, most of my literary works were concepted while I was on the run from INTERPOL, dodging cops and bullets and ex-girlfriends (by comparison, the first two were relatively easy).

I write lots of dark, twisted, morosely humorous things. I like thrillers, suspense, crime, and baby ducks (on a bed of white rice, of course . . . jk).

I hope you enjoy my work. Oddly, writing seems fairly easy. Editing, well that's for educated, buttoned-down types . . . and that's not me.

Catch me on Facebook:)

4.0 out of 5 stars Quirky, Fun, and Really Good 3 Sep 2012
By CactusTexas - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
In the interest of full disclosure, I was provided a review copy of this book. That said I still call them as I see them - good or bad.

Novels written in first person have to be really good for me to like them, and this is a really good novel. I liked it a lot. The narrative and writing are skillful and clever. It has a touch of horror with some humor thrown in for good measure. The protagonist, Jack Pagan, suffers from permanent amnesia after having a bad accident. The book starts a few months after his loss of memory with no trace left of his previous life.

The book chronicles his quest to understand why he is seeing spooky shadowy figures and seeks to understand if they are real or imagined. With the help of a friend, Ricky, and a Haitian Voodoo lady, he is confronted by the reality that there are more planes of reality than just our own, and some of them are hostile.

This book will hold your interest throughout and it is a book you'll carry around so you can read it in your spare time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing - Suspenseful! 7 Sep 2012

You immediately feel for Jack Pagan. What would I do in a similar situation? Would I hide what I am seeing? How would I manage?

Nicholas set up enough questions that you have to turn the page(s) - You simply can't put the book down till you get the answers. But, with answers come more questions, keeping you turning pages to find the answers.

If you enjoy intrigue and suspense, mixed with the paranormal, you'll enjoy See Jack Die. You may also enjoy Jeremy Raybourne and The Mystical Gene (Book 1: Journey to The New Awakening) a suspense filled science fiction, fantasy thriller.

4.0 out of 5 stars It made me want to keep the lights on! 20 Aug 2009
By Lynda Lippin - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
Nicholas Black has one of the most interesting biographies I have seen lately. A Philosophy and Psychology student cum Martial Arts Master cum Security Specialist, he has traveled the world, fought with the French Foreign Legion, was indicted on weapons charges in the US, and now is writing lots of books. Black writes both fiction and non-fiction, and is at the moment completely self-published.

I met Nicholas Black on Twitter and decided to read his latest novel and first in a series, See Jack Die. This is not light reading, but tells a very interesting and compelling story that left me wanting to read the second installment (the not yet published See Jack Hunt).

We meet Jack Pagan about four-five months after a bad accident that left him with complete amnesia. Unable to remember anything prior to his hospital stay, Jack refers to himself as a five-month-old baby who was just born. Still undergoing many medical tests and psychological investigation, Jack Pagan lives in hospital sponsored outpatient apartments and has one good friend in Ricky, a trust fund medical student.

While he never mentions it to his doctors, Jack sees spooks. Little brown nasty looking spooks who do things like rip the souls out of dead people. The novel chronicles Jack's search for what those spooks are and why he sees them. In between we get some church history, murderous book collectors, magical psychics, angels and demons, and visits with the dead.

Strangely combining the styles of Dean Koontz, Neil Gaiman, and Dan Brown, Black takes us from the hospital to the old voodoo shop of the Haitian magician Ms. Josephine, who gives Jack the centuries old and very powerful Book of Sighs, written in Nicea at the same time as the accepted Bible. This then leads to the world of the Dead, the Land of Sorrows, which exists just on top of our plane of existence and is full or morbid souls and horrifying creatures.

And the roller-coaster ride begins. Who is the strange woman who beckons Jack to the Land of Sorrows? Is Jack really St. John the Divine, the only person alive who can travel between the worlds of the living and dead and will liberate the trapped souls? Should they be liberated? What are the ghouls and should they be stopped? Can Jack's body survive his trips back to the Land of Sorrows? Will Jack ever get his memories back? And, most importantly, can he save the world, his friends, and himself?

The writing is strong, but not always even, and the book could use some professional editing. But even with a few faults I found it to be an interesting and compelling tale of ghosts, goblins, and things that go bump in the night. It made me want to keep the lights on!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, with Disclaimer 25 Nov 2013
By S. Evans - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When I browse for books, especially in the fantasy/sci-fi realms, I look first at those that promise a series. Amazon indie authors, of course, know this and often price their initial offering for a low cost to hook you in. This book did just that.

Another favorite of mine are books with quirky, unique, and funny characters and writing. Mr. Black does that with excellence in this book. Other reviewers have summarized the characters and plot much better than I could. So I will leave you with the reason I gave this great read only four stars. There is only one sequel so far, and it is pricey for an e-book. If your taste is just a few evenings with a great read that will make you laugh while scaring you a bit, though, get this book. It's worth it.
