Excellent book about the relationship between a son and his bird-obsessed father, who caught a near fatal dose of ornithology in his teenage years and never really recovered. The story starts by looking at how the bug got a grip, with honest and touching accounts of life in 1950s America, where birding was considered a great hobby for wholesome teens. However, with a career in ornithology blocked due to family expectations ( stop looking at birds & get a proper job etc ) resentment and obsession loomed... The quest to build a 'big list' then became all consuming, driving dear old dad to travel the planet counting over 7000 birds, while everything else fell apart in his wake. If you ever thought bird-watching was harmless fun your perceptions will be challenged ! It does have a happy ending however, with son and father realising the importance of family and .. hang on did I just hear a Greater Speckled Flute Finch !?
