Book Description

Mr. Darcy just isn't Flip Allison's style. She prefers novels with hot sex on the bathroom sink to the mannerly, high-tension longing of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. That is, until she pays a visit to Madame K, who promises a therapeutic massage with an opportunity to "Imagine Yourself in Your Favourite Book." Somehow, on the way to a sizzling sink-top session with a Venetian Adonis, Flip lands right in the middle of Regency England -- and dangerously close to handsome Mr. Darcy. So close, in fact, that she discovers a side of him even Jane Austen couldn't have imagined. Waking from her massage, Flip is on top of the world and ready for her upcoming book club -- that is, until she notices a new scene in which Darcy and spunky heroine Lizzy Bennet are arguing over...Flip Allison? Her rapturous liaison with Darcy has had disastrous consequences for Austen's characters -- not to mention millions of Pride and Prejudice fans!

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty and satisfying 26 Aug 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Hmm I picked this book up from the Romance and Crime bookshop in Tottenham Court Road in a fit of despair a few days ago, as I needed something to read but thought that with a cover like this it might be a waste of money. I mean this cover is truly hideously repellant, why oh why do publishers insist on this sort of "art"?

Regardless, I was very pleasantly surprised. The plot is very strong, moves along briskly, the hero and heroine are really cool and the prose is well above average. So I did read it in one day as one does. Found myself laughing out loud and had no major hang ups about suspending my disbelief about time /space/imagination travel. In fact the Pride and Prejudice theme was really well done, as a fan of Austen's masterpiece I appreciated the possibilities! In fact I think I might never look at it in quite same way. I did find myself chortling like a maniac at one point, all in all a very good afternoon's work.

I think ill go off and get her other book too now.

4.0 out of 5 stars do not be put of by the cheap cover! 16 Nov 2010
By Flouche
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Knowing that I would be working a few days abroad and stuck in a hotel I bought this paperback as pure escapism. Escapism it is! Getting ready to fly back home I was so absorbed in the story that I decided to read it on the flight. There are two sexy scenes in the book. They are written in a classy way and are by no means seedy. The cover is somewhat a letdown though. A gentleman on board of the aircraft came to talk to me and I was actually very careful to lay the book picture facing down on the table as I did feel somewhat embarrassed about the cover. My family as well have made a lot of cheeky observations as to what the book might entail (`sex version of Austen: what a sacrilege..') My advise: buy it, put a dust cover over it and by all means: ENJOY IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars oh my gosh! 14 Jun 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a very different version of Jane Austens Pride and Prejudice. It has all the characters of the original and also extra. If you dont mind your Austen spiced up with a little fantasy thrown in then this is the book for you. This story is not meant to be taken seriously and I for one (Jane Austen fan that I am) enjoyed this racy take on a classic immensely.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculously entertaining 22 Sep 2011

Hysterically funny if ludicrous romantic farce, a bit like a mix of the "Thursday Next" series with "Lost in Austen [DVD]." A large part of me cannot believe that I am giving this book four stars and seriously considered awarding the fifth. But however nonsensical the book may be, having devoured it as fast as I could, laughed out loud at least half a dozen times while reading it - and not a little chuckle either but a full-throated roar - and then bought several of the author's other books as soon as I finished it, I can hardly pretend not to have immensely enjoyed this book.

The heroine, Flip Allison, is a recently divorced ornithologist whose handsome but worthless ex-husband, also an ornithologist and now a professional rival, had a fondness for pretty students. She is more fond of trashy modern romances than classics like "Pride and Prejudice" but takes part in a reading of Jane Austen's novel with her friends.

At about the same time, Flip is introduced to an unusual hypnotist and masseur, Madam K, who has a special treatment in which you "Imagine yourself in your favourite book," and tries the treatment out.

Unfortunately, instead of imagining herself in one book, Flip's mind conjures a mix of "Pride and Prejudice" and a much more lowbrow novel set in the same epoch, and the character she becomes has a scandalous affair with Fitzwilliam Darcy which Miss Austen would never have allowed one of her characters. Even more unfortunately, Madam K's treatment isn't just something which happens in her client's heads.
