Product Description

An irrepressible rake, Lord Jack Byron is more than happy to be a bachelor. But his carefree lifestyle is thrown into jeopardy when he loses a fortune gambling - to a merchant, of all people. And the man doesn't want money as payment. Instead, he wants Jack to marry his firmly on-the-shelf daughter! Having given no thought to marriage, Jack wasn't certain a spinster like Grace Danvers was the woman to convince him otherwise. To make matters worse, her father wants the whole thing kept secret, so Jack must make her fall in love! Surprised at how easy it is to spend time in the wonderfully intelligent Grace's company - and even more surprised at how un-spinsterlike she appears - this is one debt Jack is suddenly very happy to pay off. But with his own heart now at risk, Jack will do whatever it takes to make sure Grace never finds out the devastating secret of what brought him to her door.

This book would have been a fairly pleasant, average Regency, even well written and engaging towards the end except for one thing - why on earth did the author pick the name of one of the most famous people from the Regency as the name for her hero? Everytime the allegedly shy and proper heroine referred to him, it sounded annoyingly modern. At their second meeting she's mentally referring to him as Jack Byron. I found this very jarring, and it sounded false everytime the author referred to the hero, as she had to do it in such a way that we were sure it wasn't the actual Lord Bryon she was referring to.
Other than that, there was the usual Americanisms - we have AUTUMN here, not Fall.
But if I was to get picky about that, I'd never be able to read another romance. It happens everywhere, so I won't hold it against this author. The story got a lot better towards the end, and as the heroine could legitimately dispense with his title, read a lot easier too.
If you don't mind battling through some dodgy dialogue, it's not too bad a book.

The rake, Lord John 'Jack' Byron has no inclination to marry. But when he loses a fortune in a card game, he panics, wondering how to repay his debt. The person he owes his debt to is Ezra Danvers, who has plenty of wealth. Instead of money, he says Jack must marry his daughter. The only thing is, she must never know about their arrangement. Jack agrees, but wonders what sort of a girl she is, if she's twenty-five and still unwed. Enter Miss Grace Danvers, the 5ft10 redhead, who wears spectacles. She's not like the women he's been with before, but Jack pursues her, which confuses Grace, since she's not typically 'beautiful.' Soon, she finds herself in love, and tells Jack, but he doesn't confess himself. (Why she fails to pick up on this and lets him carry on with his advances I don't know). When an event upsets her, Jack proposes and she accepts. But when she discovers a letter with details of her fiance's arrangement with her father, she breaks down and confronts Jack. When he doesn't deny it, she decides to make the most of it. She will marry him to clear off his debts, but after a period of time, he will spend some of his money to buy her a house so she can live in solitude. Jack is annoyed, but accepts her demand. Over time, the find they can't keep their hands off each other, and Grace thinks he may finally declare his love. But when she catches him with his former mistress, she goes ahead with her plan, much to his dismay. He tries telling her it meant nothing and it's her he wants, but she won't listen. Later, in her own home, she finds herself pregnant and when she's going to tell Jack, he arrives at her home. When his wife tells him her news, he's delighted and they get back together.

Overall, the book was OK. I much preferred books 1 and 3 of the Byron series. A couple of things bothered me about the story: (SPOILERS AHEAD)

1) Jack and his former mistress. You don't go around kissing former mistresses if you supposedly care for your wife. I'm sure he'd have liked it if she kissed someone else, just to see if her feelings for Jack were real. He cheated on her, and lost all credibility at this point. He should have just rebuffed his ex's advances immediately and left.
2) Grace and Jack getting back together so easily, just because she's pregnant. She seems to have forgotten what led her to leave him to begin with.

Yes... predictable but very enjoyable and engrossing 1 Dec 2009
By Vivian McDonald - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I have to admit that I have been on a romance novel kick lately and picked this out for a pleasant quick read. I read it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down.

Unlike many romance novels, I enjoyed the whole book and didn't find myself "skipping" ahead to get to the "good parts". The intermediate story held my interest (though after awhile, the author did overplay the whole "missed messages and opportunity" and "denial" themes to where by the end it was like "just be done with it already!").

One of the things I really liked about this novel was the progression from lust to a true connected relationship. It seems like often many romance novels focus on the lust, the couple gets together and everyone lives happily after ever after... THE END. Instead this story went beyond that and dealt with the evolution that every couple must go through after the initial lustful passionate part of the relationship.

The characters are likable for the most part -- they may be a bit too perfect but lets face it... this is a romance novel and character development isn't expected to be on the level of Tolstoy or Trollope! The plot is (for the most part) predictable though there were a couple of twists which I have to admit I didn't see coming.

This is the first Tracy Anne Warren book I have read but based on the strength of this story, I will be reading the first book in the trilogy and will probably look forward to the last book which is going to be released for the Kindle in January.

No -- this isn't an intellectual piece of literature. It is definitely a guilty "escapist" pleasure but as far as guilty pleasures go, this one is much better done than others I have read.

Highly recommended for the genre!

Seduced by His Touch Review 29 Nov 2009
By Margay Leah Justice - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Historical romances are among my personal favorite books to read, especially the ones where obviously mismatched people are thrown together by circumstance - or manipulative relatives - and over the course of time, come to realize that they truly care for one another. Seduced by His Touch by Tracy Anne Warren is one such book. It has all of the great elements of a mismatched love story. The handsome rogue whose circumstances dictate that he must court a woman not of his choosing. The spitfire of a woman who is the subject of the courting. And, of course, the master manipulator who forces these two together.

Lord Jack Byron is, simply put, a ladies man. He likes the ladies - all of them. But more than that, he likes his freedom. And what does the third son of a noble family do with his time besides bed women? Gamble, of course. Which leads him to the unsavory task of not only courting but marrying the daughter of a man to whom he owes a great debt.

Grace Danvers is that daughter. A self-professed "plain Jane," she is quite comfortable with the notion of never marrying and starting a family herself. She has other things to occupy her time, after all. She is an accomplished artist and content with her lot in life. She has no designs - or desires - for anything more. Until she meets Jack.

Brought together through the machinations of her merchant father, these two must come to terms with their unexpected attraction for one another.

The storyline may draw you in, but the characters and the skill with which Ms. Warren draws them, will keep you reading until the end. You'll simply have to know if these two will find their happy ending - or will she discover the secret of the bet and succumb to heartache? A delightful book that will leave you wanting to read more about the Byron family, Seduced by His Touch is a must-read for historical romance lovers.

A wonderful approach to a reusable plot. 25 Aug 2009
By Huntress Reviews - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Lord John Byron "Jack" is the third son of a duke. The rake has never had any trouble charming a female into his bed. His life forever changes when he loses a large sum in a card game to a wealthy merchant, Ezra Danvers. Ezra and Jack make a deal. Ezra will forgive Jack's debt and give him over one hundred thousand pounds if he weds his daughter, Grace. But she must never learn of this arrangement. Jack must woo Grace until she falls in love with him and always make her happy.

Jack expects Grace to be ugly or have something wrong with her. Turns out that even though she is not beautiful, Grace is very pretty. She is taller than most females, but that only means Jack will not get a sore neck whenever he looks at her. The more Jack is in Grace's company, the more Jack's fondness for her grows. Then, only a few days before they are due to wed, Grace finds the contract between Jack and her father.

**** FOUR STARS! This plot has been done often in the past. Even so, the author has written a delicious story around it. Tall and bookish Grace is not perfect, head-turning beautiful, or have the blonde hair which is so in fashion for the year 1809. Instead, she has bright red hair, is well educated, conservative, and even paints natural subjects (such as flowers) that are published in folios. As the reader, I instantly connected with this common heroine. I could easily imagine myself walking a mile in her shoes since Grace is in no way tied to high society. I would especially recommend this story for reading on your vacation, such as at the beach. ****
