I really enjoyed the first Three Worlds novel, Seduce Me in Dreams, so I was very excited for the second book in this series, especially because it was about Ender (also known as Rush in this book) who is a massive, quiet Tarian who has a knack for explosives. He was a bit of a mystery in the first book, and I wanted to find out more.
We start off Seduce Me in Flames with the heiress to the Allayan empire, Ambrea, thrown into captivity by her uncle when she won't relinquish her future crown. Ambrea stays strongs and refuses to give in to her uncle, even while locked away in the inescapable "wet rooms". While being held captive, a huge Tarian is brought in and placed in the cell across from her. She is immediately intrigued by this stranger, especially as he flirts with her and calls her "Blue Eyes". He claims that he can help her escape from the wet rooms, and she decides that now is the time to stand up and take what is rightfully hers. After their escape she realizes that the Tarian (Rush) is actually a member of the IM (Interplanetary Militia) who have rescued her to place her rightfully on her throne. Soon though, things get complicated between Rush and Ambrea when she discovers a secret that he has kept hidden for years, even from his teammates.
I wanted to love it, but I just didn't. The Rush (Ender) in this book was like a completely different character from the Rush in the first book. The only thing that was the same was his physical description and the fact that he liked explosives. In this book he was sort of annoying to me. First he was all confident and cool, flirting with Ambrea and helping her escape. Then the second they get with the rest of the team he was mean and edgy to her, for no reason. Then when she discovers his secret he just gets insecure... very insecure. And I'm sorry, but there is nothing that is less sexy than insecurity to that degree in a leading male character. It was honestly hard to read sometimes. I just wanted him to get over it.
Ambrea was alright, but she didn't stick out in my mind at all. I will forget her character tomorrow most likely.
I was upset that Ms. Frank did not delve more into the relationship between Rush and Justice (I love Justice!). There could have been a great scene there when he finally tells her about his ability, because apparently we learn in the epilogue that she was upset at him for not trusting him, but we never get to see the confrontation there.
Another thing, I love all the characters from the last book, and it was great to see them here, especially Ophelia, but the whole Bronse and Rave story line didn't add to the plot of the book at all. Great to see them pregnant, but the whole crazy sex symptom freak out was sort of unneccasary.
Lastly, and this may not apply for anyone else, but I was reading this with a Kindle app on my phone, and it was extremely hard to read at times because the paragraphs were very long.
