Merripen, the quiet and mysterious Romany, has lived with the Hathaways since his youth. Found badly injured and near death he was taken into the open loving arms of this quirky and unconventional family. Ignoring his background and the backlash of the village, Merripen was treated like a brother to the four other children. But he did not stay because he had found a family for no matter what they thought a Rom would never really be one of them ( a gadjo) nor did he want to be. What he wanted, and stayed for, was Win. For since the first moment he saw her his life had changed and a deep connection was formed. Though he could never allow himself to have Winifred, and taint her with his ugliness, he would protect her with his life while keeping her at a distance. Winifred Hathaway, on the other hand, has one goal in mind -to catch the man she has loved forever. Finally, after years away in a clinic in France, she has returned to England completely recovered. No longer the invalid, Win is tired of being treated like a butterfly under the glass. Merripen protects and cherishes her but doesn't touch -afraid he'll hurt or spoil her perfection with his sordid past. But Win wants to be his woman, his wife. Could Merripen have finally pushed her too far away? Kept her at such a distance that she''ll turn to another man?

Great book, signature Kleypas -engaging couple, superb plotting, solid writing and sinfully steamy. Win and Kev (Merripen) are well matched even though they are physically polar opposites. He's the great big, dark dangerously smoldering Rom of few words and she's the delicate/fragile angelic blond with a cool exterior. Underneath lie two complex characters who love each other deeply and must get past many hurdles to get to a HEA ending.

Excellent second story in the Hathaway Family series. A precis of the story is well described in other reviews so i won't go into that , but i feel i must take issue with some of the points made by other reviewers.
Firstly it is a series about a FAMILY ! That should give a little hint to people buying it that other family members are included!! I personally think the inclusion of the rest of the family was handled brilliantly, the ongoing love story between Cam and Amelia was not intrusive but charming and rather difficult to avoid considering the relationship between Cam and Kev which although obvious was not really supposed to be a big surprise. There were plenty of hints in both books i don't think LK thinks her readers are all idiots without the ability to work some things out for themselves.
As far as the ending being contrived and wrapped up too well i think it just gives another thread to the ongoing story not all the hints given in the book about Kev were explained - unless i missed something !!
In short a sensitive love story, with lots of interesting characters i can't wait to read more about, i am going straight onto Pollys story Tempt me at Twilight as soon as i have finished this review.
I delayed reading this book for several months because of mixed reviews, don't be out off its a great book which leaves you thirsting for more.
Did i mention the hot but believable, sex scenes which leave a warm and fuzzy feeling---aaaaaah

I have read every book LK has written.
I buy her books on name alone, if she writes it I will buy it!
I have not been disappointed.
The Hathaway series is one of my favorites of her Historical Romance books. Winifred Hathaway and Kev Merripen's story is a love story that will have you shouting out loud and routing for them every step of the way they certainly had me biting my nails and glued to the pages till 2 in the morning and when I was finished I was thoroughly satisfied and in true LK style anxiously awaiting the next book. Check out the Hathaways they're a group of misfits that you will love and wish you knew for real.

Review taken from my Blog Post (#55) in December 2010, after borrowing the book from the local library:

The second book in the Hathaway Series, telling the story of Winifred Hathaway and Kev Merripen.

Kev (a Romany) was taken in by the Hathaway clan when he was small, after being badly beaten and left for dead. He stayed on with the family, and formed a close bond with Win.

In 1848 she suffered a terrible attack of Scarlet Fever and was left an invalid. Unwilling to accept her fate, she persuaded the Family to send her off to France, along with the brother Leo, to a special clinic set up Dr Julian Harrow.

Kev's love for her is so fierce that he would do anything to protect her from harm ..... unfortunately, she has other ideas .... and wants Kev at any cost, and nothing can eventual stand in the way of that love.

Their story unfolds, along with the mystery ehind the tattoo of the Pooka both Kev and Cam Rohan Winifred's brother-in-law, another Rom).

It is perhaps quite possible to write Win off from the beginning as weak and helpless, but she is far from that, in the end showing extraordinary spunk to get the truth from Julian Harrow!

I would urge you to read it, not a greatly exciting story, but highly enjoyable never the less.

A 3.5. star rating for this one that I borrowed from the local library.
