4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin 28 July 2009
Format:Hardcover
I picked this up after considering taking the CompTIA Security+ but finding it a little bit too entry level. Anybody buying this book needs to remember that this is not a CCNA study guide, but is for the CCNA 'Security' exam.

Typical CiscoPress quality, a wealth of information and definitely enough to pass the exam. I would also say that this is more prestigious than the CompTIA certification, but is along a different path (and you will need to be a CCNA in order to take this exam).

Having purchased this in pursuit of CCNA Security I expected a high-quality product with all the information I needed in a clear-to-understand format. How disappointed was I.

Firstly, the most annoying thing about this book is the sheer volume of errors that infest it. The errata from the ciscopress website is large BUT there are loads more! I got tired of telling CP about them so just corrected them as I cam across them.

The firewall chapter is both confusing and also missing using SDM to configure a Zone Based Firewall! That is not forgiveable and if this was included I may have given 3 stars but with this 'blueprint' topic missing the book just about gets 2 stars! Other chapters aren't too well written either and found the material hard to read.

I passed with this plus LOTS of 'googling' and white paper reading from the cisco press site. The CD/book questions aren't worth much if you are looking to take the exam that is so don't buy it just for those.

I would recommend the 'Self-Study' guide for IINS as this has received a much better response from the various reviews/recommendations I have since seen.

It's useful to pass the CCNA Security exams without problems.

I recommend to understand theory before you practice with real tests.
