Product Description

The FIRST EVER DVD RELEASE of this bizarre journey through the battle of the sexes. "Imagine you were making love to this girl. Imagine you were making love to this boy..." Celebrated filmmaker Antony Balch directs one of the most idiosyncratic and unforgettable British movies of all time - the film censor tried to stop! From beyond the grave, a 1,000-year-old mummy (voiced by Valentine Dyall) narrates a series of kinky stories to illustrate the age-old battle of the sexes. From cosmic thrills, supernatural kinks and swining permissiveness, this is a boy versus girl in a hip, psychedelic mix of vintage glamour and grotesque horror. Now fully restored from the original negatives, Secrets of Sex features a cost of gorgeous young models including Sue Bond (The Benny Hill Show), Cathy Howard (School for Sex) and Nicola Austine (Come Play with Me) and is presented here completley uncut for the very first time in the UK. 'Disturbing' - The Times 'Freaky' - The Guardian 'Stylish, glossy, pop porno' Today's Cinema Starring: Valentine Dyall, Elliott Stein, Sue Bond, Cathy Howard and Nicola Austine Director: Antony Balch Date of Release: 1970 Certification: 18 Extras: Audio Commentary with Producer Richard Gorden, Original Theatrical Trailer, Interview with Write Elliott Stein, 2 Antony Balch Short Films (The Cut-Ups & Towers Open Fire) & Best of British Trailers

Director Anthony Balch also released this film under the more apt title of 'Bizarre'. Okay, I've seen quite a few very strange films in my time, but witnessing a 1000 year old mummy narrating a series of extremely odd tales illustrating the ongoing battle of the sexes is a pretty unique viewing experience. Just maybe not a very satisfying one.
Thats a little unfair of me really. The sleeve notes that accompany this release shed a bit more light on the circumstances of the film, stating that Balch wanted to make an erotic/horror anthology very much in the style of the ones Amicus studios were releasing at the time, but it seems budgetary limitations overcame Balch's ambition. What we have here is a bit of a mess. The various tales that the Mummy, voiced by Valentine Dyall narrates encompass a multitude of genres from a spy spoof to a parody of a sex film via a couple of genuine horror segments. In fact the whole film does have a parodic feel to it. The stories that do come off best however are the straight horrors, one concerning a lesbian photographer taking rather too much enjoyment in the suffering of her model, and the other tells the story of an elderly businessman who desires a son to replace the one he lost in a car accident. His much younger wife obliges, but sometimes you should be careful what you wish for. I must add that even the humourous segments do have an uneasy feel to them .
One thing that is for certain is that this release does the film justice, as its a lovely transfer, and there are two short films on the disc that were collaborations between Balch and William Burroughs. After this film Balch would go on to direct one more feature length film, the wild and wonderful 'Horror Hospital' which was a real triumph for Balch.
