Product Description

Product Description

This unique book examines the history, culture, and inner workings of the seven smallest independent countries in Europe. These are among the oldest states on the continent and, despite their diversity, they have much in common. Most have relatively high per capita incomes and life expectancies, and relatively low unemployment. This narrative presents the unique issues that confront small countries, including maintaining their independence, economic viability, preserving their native languages, and sustaining their governments. The second part of the book describes each microstate in turn, showing how each one has met these challenges and adapted over time. These concise and engaging chapters contain cultural information on subjects including the arts, gastronomy, and popular tourist sites.

A tag on the back cover categorises this book as `Travel/History' (personally I was hoping for more of the latter in the content). Flipping through the pages, I found the font a little bigger than could be wished, and the plentiful photographs were almost all attributed to `... Ministry of Tourism' &c. So this book could have fallen between two stools. And I fear that, to some extent perhaps, it has. But, on the other hand, it's an agreeably lightweight overview of European Microstates; or, if you prefer, a not-really-filled-with-many-in-depth-useful-details-but-plenty-of-background-information travel guide to the same. While it's not up to Lonely Planet levels of travel detail, the book offers a fairly substantial flavour of practicalities in the countries discussed. The book's title may suggest a certain amount of non-public-domain, nay, even cloak-&-dagger intelligence, but I found it a well-compiled digest of all-round information on these seven states.

The Secrets of The Seven Smallest States in Europe may not have the most attractive name, but it is a great read for anyone who wants to know about these funny little countries in Europe. It starts by reviewing the Geography and Government etc.. And comparing each state with each other. It then considers each state individually. Thomas Eccardt gives each of the countries titles such as: San Marino "The Freedom Microstate" which is a nice quirk.

The book also explains how the countries came about, their History and their local cuisine, it also includes a list of places to visit in each Microstate.

Overall a fantastic well-informed book that gives you all the information that you would need.
