3.0 out of 5 stars The starting grid.... 9 April 2006
By Adam Brooks VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
On hearing of this release, I was hoping for something that would delve into the very individual styles of 'the Guardian' crossword setters, and therefore give something for beginner and experienced solver alike.

I was hoping for a text that would tease out the idiosyncracies of (to use their pen names) Paul, Bunthorne, Auracaria et al., as the title "Secrets of the Setters" suggests. That it dosen't do this seems a shame and a missed opportunity. What it does do is deliver a good and clear beginners guide in a market already crowded with similar books.
However, this remains a good place to get started, or to get someone you know started.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcone to the world of crosswords! 17 Feb 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Many people are put off from doing crosswords because they don't know how to approach the clues or know what to look for when solving them.
This excellent book provides and entry into the arcane world of crosswords and can provide a start to a hobby that is informative, educational and downright fun.
It might be an idea to buy a crossword solver to help complete the clues when starting out and then working out how one has arrived at the answer.
