For not only does Sam blame Ruth's father for Martin's death, he sees little reason why his business plans should be thwarted by family tragedy. If Martin cannot marry Alicia then it is Ben's duty to take his brother's place, regardless of where his own affections lie

Not really familiar with this author but will certainly read more. Basically a tale of families involved in whaling and fishing. The hardship of fishing is well described. There is love, hate, forgiveness,mystery and a little bit of fantasy. The characters were likable but ordinary hard working people with human failings. I enjoyed what was an unusual story well written
