The book is written as a handbook for interpreting ancient monuments, and understanding the nuances that help them to function as sacred spaces. The author draws on many ancient monuments, British, European, and several North American monuments - for those largely familiar with European, and pyramid cultures this is a refreshing inclusion. He also cites several of his own impressive projects, giving extensive account of how they were made...
The book appeals to me as a gardener wishing to incorporate sacred space into my gardening, and as a scholar of different beliefs, especially of those relating to ancient monuments. It is a largely enjoyable read, though the latter third of the book becomes frighteningly like a maths textbook in explaining alignments. For those already inclined towards belief that could be classified as 'new age', this will be a good read, but I feel that many will take issue with much that Chuck Pettis writes.
The most remarkable thing about this book is the seamless blend of the mystical with the mathematical. Chuck Pettis is a mathematician, but is also a well known dowser and ley line hunter. Expect to have earth angels and subtle energies explained in one breath, and the mathematics of planetary motion and symbolic geometry in the next. I am enthusiastic about this book. It has inspired me to begin design of my own stone circle. But I will admit a bias. I have had the pleasure of knowing the author personally for many years.
