Amazon Review

The main reasons to visit or build sacred power centres, says sacred space designer Chuck Pettis, are to have profound mystical experiences, grow spiritually, heal the earth and meditate to expand one's consciousness. Pettis provides a powerful aid to these purposes with Secrets of Sacred Space, in which the complicated subjects of geomancy, symbolism, numerology, and astronomical alignments are explained in depth. Secrets of Sacred Space is not only a guided tour of ancient monuments such as Stonehenge, but a practical manual for creating one's own sacred space, whether with gigantic boulders on a mountain top or tiny shells on a shelf. Readers learn how to choose a sacred site, communicate with spiritual beings and dowse for earth energies; and are treated to a plethora of other fascinating and useful occult and practical information needed to create sacred places. --P Randall Cohan

2.0 out of 5 stars Difficult One 20 Nov 2002
Format:Paperback
This is a book that has had me scratching my head in trying to work out how to write a balanced review. I am always reticent to write a more negative review, as I recognize how much authors invest of themselves in a work. It is well written, and well explained, assuming a very base level knowledge. Some may say this was a dumbed-down approach, but it is helpful for anyone not familiar with the themes of the book, and etymologies of keywords are consistently supplied.

The book is written as a handbook for interpreting ancient monuments, and understanding the nuances that help them to function as sacred spaces. The author draws on many ancient monuments, British, European, and several North American monuments - for those largely familiar with European, and pyramid cultures this is a refreshing inclusion. He also cites several of his own impressive projects, giving extensive account of how they were made...

The book appeals to me as a gardener wishing to incorporate sacred space into my gardening, and as a scholar of different beliefs, especially of those relating to ancient monuments. It is a largely enjoyable read, though the latter third of the book becomes frighteningly like a maths textbook in explaining alignments. For those already inclined towards belief that could be classified as 'new age', this will be a good read, but I feel that many will take issue with much that Chuck Pettis writes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeping the tradition of stone circles alive! 6 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is a well-balanced book, taking either a traditional, scientific approach to sacred spaces, or encouraging people to create their own power centers. Secrets of Sacred Space is filled with photos, drawings, diagrams, and a brilliant color insert. If the geometry gets too overwhelming, you'll be comforted with the wisdom and history within.

4.0 out of 5 stars Esoteric AND Practical 19 Jan 2000
By David L Rousseau - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a book about the art and science of earth monuments. It is written in a friendly and accessible style with many rich anecdotes by a man who has committed many years to not only the study of sacred place, but to practical construction of new monuments. Surprisingly, it is not an exhaustive documentation or analysis of ancient sites, though there is some brief discussion of these. It is, first and foremost, a practical guide for those who wish to investigate the subtle aspects of place and to create sacred places today. For example, each chapter ends with a concise summary of the information covered in the chapter and a list of suggested exercises. The appendices include tables of the angles for significant solar and lunar events for several latitudes.

The most remarkable thing about this book is the seamless blend of the mystical with the mathematical. Chuck Pettis is a mathematician, but is also a well known dowser and ley line hunter. Expect to have earth angels and subtle energies explained in one breath, and the mathematics of planetary motion and symbolic geometry in the next. I am enthusiastic about this book. It has inspired me to begin design of my own stone circle. But I will admit a bias. I have had the pleasure of knowing the author personally for many years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Secrets of Sacred Space 16 Jan 2000
By Bre Pettis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
If you have any interest in sacred spaces like stone circles, then this is the book for you. This is the most comprehensive, detailed book out there on the subject. While the book gives you an introduction into understanding and creating sacred space, it is chock full of beautiful pictures of beautiful places. Besides that, it also gives you the details you need to know to create your own powerful sacred space. Now you could say that I'm biased because the author is my dad, but he has been doing research on this topic since I was born, 27 years ago, and he is a top notch expert on sacred space. Another great thing about this book is that it isn't boring reading. Chuck Pettis introduces the reader to concepts of sacred space by telling stories about his adventures that are really amazing, like the whole chapter on the Ellis Hollow stone circle. Some of the stories are scary to, like the encounter that he and his friend Mike had while map dowsing Seattle. This is the type of book that I put next to Andy Goldsworthy's books on the table and watch my guests ooh and ah. Buy it now and prepare yourself for a new way of looking at the world.
