Dion Fortune herself wrote that these stories can be read as supernatural thrillers, or as fictionalised case-studies.
Fortune was not primarily a novelist, but in these stories her writing is probably at its best. She uses the familiar "Holmes and Watson" relationship for Taverner and Rhodes to provide the reader with an anchor while she explores unfamiliar psychic experiences. As a magician, she was one of the major figures of the last century and so knew what she was writing about from first-hand experience. Taverner is based on her friend and mentor Dr Theodore Moriarty, who was both a magician and psychologist.

I own all the fiction works of Mrs. Fortune.Of all of her works, this is the most interesting and easy to read. Not only the prose is easy and clear but it is very entertaining and illustrative.The stories are just long enough to stablish a well deffined plot but not so long to get you distracted. Most of the stories are written with a witty tongue in cheek attitude and are a lot of fun to read . However, and this is where Mrs. Fortune achievent lies, have I ever read so many insights into the occult written in such a basic , easy and fun way . The characters interct in a very credible way and the ease with which Mrs. Fortune discloses occult issues is simply insurpassable. Beside the the style of the language and some allussions to details of the period you could not imagine this book war written some eighty-something years ago. If you want to introduce some one to occult fiction aqnd literature, this is one of the best way to do so. Decidely one of my favorite works in occult fiction. Highly recomended.

Initially I found this book to be slow moving. However, once started it was difficult to put down. A complex book but enjoyable.
