Book Description

15 Sep 2011

In a villa on the coast of Montenegro, Abby Cormac witnesses the brutal murder of her lover, diplomat Michael Lascaris. The last thing she remembers is a gun pointed directly at her. She wakes to find herself at the centre of a diplomatic nightmare. Everyone wants an answer but no one wants to listen. Even her employers at the Foreign Office believe she's hiding something. She is completely alone.

As Abby tries to piece together the last few months of Michael's life in order to get at the truth, she soon realises that he wasn't quite what he seemed. What exactly was his relationship with one of the most ruthless men in the Balkans - a war criminal who has never been brought to justice? And what links Michael's gift to her of a gold necklace with its Christian monogram, a 4th century manuscript left in the shadow of Emperor Constantine's palace at Trier and an inscription on a tomb in Rome?

When Abby investigates further, it becomes clear that someone wants to suppress a secret, one that has been kept hidden for centuries. And they will stop at nothing to do so...

Review

Praise for Other Titles by Tom Harper:

"In the tradition of The Da Vinci Code, a page-turner of a novel. Like Dan Brown, Tom Harper knows how to ratchet up the tension."
--"Choice magazine"

"Scholarly but speedy narrative, steeped in medieval horrors ranging from flogging to famine, all anchored in what feels like a passion for history and spelling out the way things were."
--"Literary Review
"
"Tom Harper writes with strident clarity in this epic tale of murder and betrayal, bloodshed and romance. Gripping from the first page, the reader is swept up in this colourful and convincing portrayal of an Emperor and his realm, under siege. Well-researched, and cinematic in its imagery, this is a fast-paced and exciting debut."
--"Ink"

"Harper effortlessly draws the reader into the court intrigues and conspiracies of 11th-century Byzantium in his outstanding debut."
--"Publishers Weekly" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Tom Harpers latest novel, Secrets of the Dead, is a thrilling journey through one of the most important episodes in religious history superbly woven into a present day murder that starts a chase across Eastern Europe and a race to discover an ancient secret that others do not want revealed.

This is the author's third book written in two parallel worlds and the seamless way the two stories intertwine shows great understanding of both situations written about events centuries apart.

As an avid reader of Tom Harpers work I have always been impressed by the detailed knowledge he has of the historical facts and how these events are expressed to bring a modern novel to life, to write about current places in such detail shows how thorough his research has been, to then make a scenario 700 years earlier so clear takes great skill and this novel is a roller coaster of thrills through two very different worlds.

The characters are wonderfully constructed with their own histories as Emperor Constantine's right hand man Gaius Valerius 'Maximus', written in the first person searches out an ancient murderer while Abby Cormac the present day heroine has her own murder scene to deal with.

Both stories are inevitably connected but there a several occasions when the two stories have more definite links which will ensure the reader keeps the pages turning!

5.0 out of 5 stars a page turner : not a single moment of bordom 7 Jan 2012
By Amelrode TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I have read a few of Tom Harper's books and I enjoy his work more an more.

The Secret of the Dead is properly his best novel to date. It is entertaining, fast running and switches between past and present effortsless. The story is not too far fetched. TH observed very well and e.g. his discription of Belgarde and the EU mission is superb. Well done.

For me it was a real page turner and I was not bored a singel sec. I just loved it. 5 stars!!

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing 7 Mar 2013
By AW
Format:Paperback
I found this book very disappointing. It appears to be a Dan Brown-esque thriller but without the peak of action halfway through. However I thought the worst was the lack of depth in the characters: they were not likeable neither are you able to relate to them, simply because they are so distant and cold. The object of the hunt (the "treasure") was only revealed after 80% of the reading was done. An all together bland read. Will not be ordering this author again.
