Biography

The David Sylvian that fronted new wave pop band Japan wore luminescent hair and glam make-up; on the cover of his solo debut, 1984's Brilliant Trees, he was stylish and refined, a gentleman popster. But the illustration that introduces 2003's Blemish sends a different message: he's bedraggled and unshaven, his far-off expression turned haunted. The new millennium has seen a more ... This CD is probably David Sylvian at his peak; side 2 of the LP is particularly good. As with most of his solo work, this is quite a departure from the sound of Japan, and a stepping stone on the way to his more experimental work that came later. If you liked Japan or his first solo LP Brilliant Trees, then this is definitely worth checking out, but it is more adventurous. ABout 10 years after this he released another brilliant LP called Dead Bees on a Cake which is also a brilliant work. Another good one was Nine Horses from about 2005 which he did with his brother, Japan's drummer, Steve Jansen, and others, in a collaboration called Snow Borne Sorrow.

A hidden gem! Probably overlooked because of the quirky title, but right up there with his best..."Brilliant Trees", which s one of the best ever albums! Give it a listen, you won't be disappointed!
