Product Description

“TRACY HOGG HAS GIVEN PARENTS A GREAT GIFT–the ability to develop early insight into their child’s temperament.”
–Los Angeles Family

When Tracy Hogg’s Secrets of the Baby Whisperer was first published, it soared onto bestseller lists across the country. Parents everywhere became “whisperers” to their newborns, amazed that they could actually communicate with their baby within weeks of their child’s birth. Tracy gave parents what for some amounted to a miracle: the ability to understand their baby’s every coo and cry so that they could tell immediately if the baby was hungry, tired, in real distress, or just in need of a little TLC. Tracy also dispelled the insidious myth that parents must go sleepless for the first year of a baby’s life–because a happy baby sleeps through the night. Now you too can benefit from Tracy’s more than twenty years’ experience. In this groundbreaking book, she shares simple, accessible programs in which you will learn:

• E.A.S.Y.–how to get baby to eat, play, and sleep on a schedule that will make every member of the household’s life easier and happier.
• S.L.O.W.–how to interpret what your baby is trying to tell you (so you don’t try to feed him when he really wants a nap).
• How to identify which type of baby yours is–Angel, Textbook, Touchy, Spirited, or Grumpy–and then learn the best way to interact with that type.
• Tracy’s Three Day Magic–how to change any and all bad habits (yours and the baby’s) in just three days.

At the heart of Tracy’s simple but profound message: treat the baby as you would like to be treated yourself. Reassuring, down-to-earth, and often flying in the face of conventional wisdom, Secrets of the Baby Whisperer promises parents not only a healthier, happier baby but a more relaxed and happy household as well.

Forget Gina Ford... 17 July 2005
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is a great book for new mums - very positive, reassuring and helpful, but also compulsive reading! Tracy Hogg's compassionate approach to crying babies and their concerned mums is a breath of fresh air after all the rhetoric of controlled crying. I didn't believe it was right to leave my baby to cry - even for a short time - and this book gave me the confidence to parent the way I wanted to without feeling neurotic and, importantly, whilst knowing I was in fact creating a bond of trust.

By detailing the various baby types (my first was an Angel but my second was definitely Spirited!) and how best to handle them, Tracy Hogg restores a feeling of control to frazzled parents.

The E.A.S.Y. parenting schedule gives baby the routine she requires whilst not imposing an inflexible system on the mother... you watch the baby, not the clock! But it's not all about the structure, it's about 'tuning in' to your individual baby's needs and identifying the signs of hunger, boredom, tiredness et al before the crying starts. Forget Gina Ford... this lady loves babies and it shows.

I have read and re-read this book many times - for both my first and second child. It encourages you to see your baby as an individual from the first day, to look and understand how he or she is trying to communicate with you. As you get into practise, following the down-to-earth advice, your baby becomes clearer. With my second child, I found this allowed me time to enjoy my baby, without worry over 'too much' crying, etc. For first time parents, reading this before you baby is born will allow you time to think about how you want to parent your child. It isnt just about getting your baby to sleep. It is about enjoying those vital early months, communicating with your baby, and watching their fascinating development take place.

This is a compelling read with lots of useful information. I imagine that if your baby falls clearly within the Author's 'Baby Types', the tips and advice given would be very valuable.

If you're looking for a book that clearly describes and explains your babies cries, you may be disappointed - I found that the cries I was most curious about didn't fit into the Author's limited descriptions and my baby's tired cries only vaguely resemble the description given.

However, we found that the tips for settling an over-stimulated baby were very useful and have worked well for us.

The Author has the unfortunate tendancy to refer to 'bad' parents who have made 'mistakes' which I feel is unecessarily negative; a new parent who's trying their hardest doesn't need to feel that they're bad.

I got sick of the Author referring to everyone as 'luv' and 'duckie' and found some of her language a bit 'preachy' but these minor critisisms aside, it is an interesting read; a book worth buying in a group to share rather than a 'must have'.
