Product Description

Miriam, a Washington secretary in her late twenties, recently divorced, living in a drab apartment and stuck in a dead-end job, longs for fame, fortune and love. Her days are spent in an office cubicle, surrounded by files belonging to applicants for U. S. Peace grants, a program that sends scholars abroad to teach and disseminate American ideals¾or maybe for more dubious purposes.

Miriam's two best friends at work, flower child Jocelyn and conventional Cass, harbor ambitions of their own. The three secretaries lunch together weekly at a nightclub that Jocelyn co-manages in her spare time. Her life's dream is to be reunited with a rock star who got his start there. Cass sets her sights on a local football hero, and hatches a plot to use her superior secretarial skills to ensnare him. Miriam plans to write an investigative piece about her agency for an underground newspaper editor who holds court there. The three girlfriends confront their dreams and their demons in a wild finale, a fund-raiser for a fire-breathing Mayoral candidate.

From the cubicle to the Oval Office, Secretarial Wars offers a light-hearted look at bureaucratic life in Washington, D. C.

Kubrick Directs 9 to 5 6 July 2007
By Floyd M. Orr - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Linda Gould has produced an unusual first novel. Secretarial Wars crawls quietly through the files of a Washington bureaucracy looking for love in all the wrong places. Three secretaries act upon their romantic fantasies set over a scenic backdrop that reeks of The Bush Administration. These three ladies may or may not have unveiled a political scandal, and therein lies the plot of Secretarial Wars.

This is an exceptionally well composed and edited first book by a new author. The plot develops slowly and meticulously, as if it had been directed by Stanley Kubrick. Anyone who reads this book will obviously be reminded of the hit movie, 9 to 5, in which three secretaries revolt in an unprecedented manner. The unusual part is that Secretarial Wars is not exactly a comedy, a drama, a romance, or a mystery. Like Kubrick's movies, this story is not for the impatient of mind, but also, like 9 to 5, this chicklit story will appeal to America's female computer slaves. Ms. Gould's vocabulary is exemplary and her stylistic endeavors are mature. Vast hordes of first-time authors could take lessons from Linda Gould.
nbaez 3 Feb 2005
By Nathalie Baez - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I am deeply appreciative of how the protagonist seemed to have like a million thoughts running through her head every second of every day. So often books only mention the actions taken by characters and their thoughts on these actions and nothing more, when really no one processes life in such a simple way. Most of all the book made me think about the fact that we live in a culture where we are constantly encouraged to pursue our dreams but how often unless we know at least one person who has gone through more or less the same thing and can guide us through the process we are lost as to how to even start tackling the matter. Moreover, this book is a great asset for writers to have as it takes character development to a whole new, and important, level.
