Secret Wars being the first comic compilation I have bought to date, I feel inclined to give it a good rating but it perhaps deserves one oblivious to this. The story was creative with many unexpected twists that ensured I was kept guessing. Who is on who's side? How will they survive? Etc. Having no background knowledge to this storyline was also of little importance; the characters were accessible and their pasts seemed not to matter whilst their powers became apparent.
The art work was dated (obviously) but not to the extent of being a hindrance to the comic. It actually added a more vintage feel that made me warm more towards both the characters and the storyline itself.
In true Marvel form it leaves an open ending which frustrated me on the smallest level as two, maybe three characters are unaccounted for. However, it took nothing away from my pleasure in reading it.
All in all it was a delight to read and a must-buy for those just starting their comic collections and the veterans alike.

OK, so I'm actually 33 years old BUT! I have very fond memories of getting the original comics when I was small and thrilled I was to see this collected edition by Marvel available.

Eventually I convinced myself to order it without shame (old as I am now) and am glad I did. The memories came flooding back. How clearly I remembered some of the story threads and scenes. Looking back, what a big leap this was for Marvel, an epic-style story involving all their main characters. The art still looks great and the quality of the paper is good too. True, expository dialogue is everywhere ("thank goodness my ion-clocking shield device protects me from this vicious laser attack" etc) and seemingly every sentence ends with an exclamation mark! Which! After a while! Sends you mad!

But I suppose that is part of the charm.

It was a grand vision. Also to note - I was partly confusing in my mind this series with what is apparently the SECOND series (i.e. "Secret Wars II") where the Beyonder actually turns up on earth, but that is not part of this series, so I will have to track that down separately.

No extra bits or essays - perhaps that would be a bit pretentious given the straight ahead action-fun core of the story. If you want deep, buy Alan Moore, but if you want nostalgia, you could do a lot worse.

This is a must buy for any marvel fan! I recently bought this because I read The Amazing Spiderman: Origin of the Hobgoblin and Secret Wars is a direct sequel (the concluding pages of that book lead directly into Secret Wars). So if you're following Spiderman chronologically I thought I'd help you out by telling you! ANYWAY, it's a fantastic book filled to the brim with the Arch nemeses and super villains of the heroes involved and takes you across the galaxy to an amazing adventure which you wont forget! BUY IT!

This was the first Marvel comic I bought and introduced me to a whole range of characters I later got to know in their own comics.

Notable as the first Marvel Universe wide event, now a regular staple of the comic universes.

It is an exciting premise - a being of unfathomable power summons Earth's greatest heroes and villains to battle it out for the prize of their greatest wishes. Exciting and well executed.

Bought for my son at Christmas, brilliant graphic novel to get him up and running. First appearance of Spidey in the black suit and a classic mini series by Marvel nicely bound in one edition.

I still have detailed fond memories of recieving my weekly copy of Secret Wars delivered by the paper boy back in the 80's.So when it was released as a complete graphic novel with full colour pages i was foaming at the mouth. To me,this is simply one of the finest marvel storylines to be hatched up,not to mention being the greatest crossover i can remember.Think of practically everyone of your favourite heroes & villains(bar a selected few,well..nothings perfect) and chances are, they're in here! I wont go into a description of the actual story because i would probably do it a huge injustice so I'll just urge you to purchase this book because i can guarantee that even if you only have a fondness for a few of the major players in marvel(Spidey,Xmen, hulk etc..) you will not be able to put this down! Best graphic novel ever!!!!!

What a great read, I stumbled apon these by chance and it was like a trip down memory lane, I had some issues in my youth, but what a find to have all 12 issues in one cool read. Definately some of the best work Marvel has done, I would recommend to any super hero fan, this is a marvel fest of battles, with a great story line and classic images.
