This is NOT a guidebook for those visiting Venice for the 1st - or even 2nd or 3rd time. It does not cover the 'big' sites (Piazza, Basilica and Doges Palace) except to point out some historical minutiae, nor are a lot of the major churches covered. It is however a wonderful book for those who visit regularly and who are looking for the hidden - often very hidden - treasures. It focuses on the details, and provides good historical information and background for the things covered. Many of the places described are only available by appointment, so may not always be available to visit on a short trip. It's a lovely production, the maps are clear- and it's not to heavy to carry with you.

I went for the 5th time in Venice and decided to offer this book to the person I was visiting. We ended up escaping the tourists paths and discovered so many hidden and secret places that both of us had never heard of. It was a sunny week end packed with tourists and our aventures made us wander in surprisingly interesting alternative route and palazzo. A definite must read.

Secret Venice is a great guide to anyone who is a frequent visitor to Venice. It takes you away from the main tourist sights and provides useful information about how to access lesser known places. It provides more detail and information about places and objects of interest that could easily be missed when walking.
