Product Description

Product Description

Finding a genuine haunted house for a movie set sounds like fun -- and a great way to generate publicity for the Three Investigators' new detective agency. But when the boys arrive for an overnight visit at Terror Castle -- home of a deceased horror-movie actor -- they soon find out how the place got its name!

From the Author

Robert Arthur's daughter wants to hear from you!
I’m not the author, Robert Arthur, but his daughter, Elizabeth Arthur. Just writing that sentence reminds me of how many fan letters Dad used to get which either began "Dear Mr. Author," or which said, "since you are a published arthur..." My father died in 1969, before he even had a chance to read most of those letters, or to know how many readers were going to be affected by The Three Investigators. For years, fan mail from children went to my Aunt Margaret, who answered every single letter she ever received, and then it came to me, who, I am ashamed to admit, didn’t.

But I was still very happy to get the letters, and to know that there was a huge group of loyal and enthusiastic fans of Jupiter Jones and Pete Crenshaw and Bob Andrews out there somewhere. Now that the first six of Dad’s books are finally back in print, I would so like to be in touch directly with those of you who have already posted reviews to this page, and also with any other fan of the series who may, in future, visit the site.

Please e-mail me, Elizabeth Arthur, at bauersa@muohio.edu. Even now, I can’t promise to write a personal response to everyone who writes me, because I am new to e-mail, and I can’t estimate how many letters I may get this way. I do promise to try to get something back to all of you who write, however. My father would have been so happy to read your comments, and to know what an influence his books had. He had a faith in the good taste and intelligence of young readers which is, I think, amply borne out by the good taste and intelligence of the adults his young readers have turned into!

Looking at the existing reviews I thought it was about time you had one from another part of the globe. Growing up in the 1970's in England (and still am!) I always enjoyed stories, but was not particularly keen at reading. Alfred Hitchcock and the Three investigators changed all this. Stealing the Secret of Terror Castle from my brother, and holding illicit reading sessions, I was hooked. Christmas and Birthdays were now dominated by requests for Three Investigator books. Their world became mine. It didn't matter that it was based in the USA. Jupiter, Bob and Pete were truely Global Pioneers. They were like friends, perhaps even better, you knew they would never let you down or disappoint. For at least five years these guys were there with me. However, like many friendships we drifted apart, they were sent to the attic by my Dad, and when I attempted to retieve them many years later they had disappeared. I still believe my brother stole them but he disputes it. I carried on with my life, marriage, children, career, the usual, but I could never forget. Therefore when I was walking past a local second-hand bookshop near to where I work, I was amazed to see a whole row of the Three Investigator books (Original editions). They were actually on the bargain sale row, and when I took them all to the counter the assistant was very surprised. I was in seventh heaven. It was like a part of my past had been restored to me. They now have pride of place on my bookshelf at home, right next to my Charles Dickens collection. What I guess I am trying to say is that these books are not only to be read and forgotten, they have the power to stay with you forever. Thank you Robert Arthur, you helped make this Englishman's childhood a very happy one, and I will never forget that.

Hello to Old Friends 21 Jan 2003
By Daniel Jolley HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER

All of the Three Investigators books are much more than children's books. Reading this book brought back all kinds of memories from my childhood years, and I enjoyed it almost as much now as I did twenty years ago. The biggest danger of adulthood is forgetting your childhood, and I am somewhat surprised to realize that I have forgotten as much as I have already. How could I have forgotten Jupiter Jones? When I was young, I wanted to be Jupe--the brains, the adventurous spirit, the dauntless courage, the determination and drive to know everything. He was my hero. I dreamed of having my own secret headquarters, with all of those great hidden entrances. I should add here that I was a nerd, and that accounts for some of the admiration I had for the stocky sleuth. Maybe athletes by nature aren't as drawn to these boys as I was, but I always felt as if I knew these guys. Pete Crenshaw and Bob Andrews are great all-American guys in their own right. All three are very different individuals, but together they do form a powerful team and serve as a wonderful model of the power of friendship. The only thing I can't figure out is why Bob spends so much time working at the library. At one point in this book, he has the task of reorganizing the whole catalogue--I work at a library now, so I know this is a pretty big task to be assigning to a kid.

This book, while eminently readable by youngsters, is more than satisfying to me as an adult. The story is suspenseful and well-contrived. Robert Arthur does a masterful job of allowing the reader to "investigate" the mystery along with the Three Investigators. The boys come across as extraordinary but very real. I can't imagine any youngster, girl or boy, who would not be drawn in to these adventures, and I can think of no better way to introduce a child to the enjoyment of reading than to give him/her one of these books. The Secret of Terror Castle is the first one, so I would start with it. If you are an adult who loved these books as a youngster, don't be afraid to pick this book up and reintroduce yourself to your old friends. If you happen to be an adult who has never immersed himself in the world of the Three Investigators, do yourself a favor and pick one up--it may be about as close as you can come to recapturing the magic of your youth.

I have been looking for some time how to get hold of all the books as I started reading the Three Investigators Series when I recieved my first book when I was 13 - 'The Laughing Shadow'... I've been hooked ever since.

I don't read that much to be honest, but I was hooked by the adventures of Jupiter, bob and pete - I always used to relate to Jupiter because I was of the same 'stature' and always knew how he felt.

I've read all of the books apart from about 6 or 7 - I've been trying libraries, bookshops and jumble sales but never found the ones I'm looking for.... I'm still looking.

I couldn't believe how many people love the series so much... I'm now in my 20's and I still love to read these books... although they are classed as childrens books they definately attract a mature audience also...
