Product Description

Product Description
Terrorism took the world stage in 1970, when the PLO hijacked three airliners in Jordan. It has not been out of the news since. From 'Black September' to the massacre of the Israeli athletes at Munich, from the IRA to ETA and Osama Bin Laden's attacks on America, terrorist organizations have waged a pitiless war that neither law enforcement agencies nor conventional armies can stop. This new type of war requires new, secret soldiers. Special Forces, above all the British SAS, have demonstrated their ability to take the war to the terrorists. At Mogadishu in 1977 and at the Iranian Embassy in London, hostages were rescued in split-second assaults. Intelligence and timely action defeated a succession of terrorist operations in northern Ireland. Only Special Forces can attack world terrorism with the lethal precision demanded. Peter Harclerode investigates counter-terrorist operations from the Middle East to Northern Ireland, from Germany to Columbia.

About the Author
Peter Harclerode was commissioned into the Irish Guards in 1967, serving in the UK, Middle East and Far East. He has also served in the SAS and the Parachute Regiment.

First Sentence
At 7.23 p.m. on the bank holiday evening of Monday 5 May 1980, television viewers throughout the United Kingdom were startled when the normal evening diet of light entertainment and soap opera was dramatically interrupted without warning as BBC and ITV broadcasters switched to live coverage of an extraordinary scene: figures in black appearing on the roof of the Iranian embassy in Princes Gate, London, which had been the scene of a siege for the past six days. Read the first page

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book on terrorism and one of its remedies..., 27 Aug 2002
I bought this book since I am interested in the subject matter, especially after the terrorist attacks on 11th of September. This book is a good example how all violent events on the political stage can be summaarised in one place. The author focuses on the birth of terrorism in 1960's when there was a great clash between the two great ideologies, communism and liberal democracy. This book is very useful for people who wish to learn more about reasons connections between assasinations, bombings and hijacking that happend from 1960's up to year 2000.

The first three chapters are particularly vivid and remind me of news articles that have been put in one extensive database of world terrorism. 4th and 5th chapters represent the global and US respones to this violent political phenomenon of confrontation. The rest of the book focuses in more detail on eight operations undertaken by military and police forces around the world. Some ended as successful some as failures. For example there is an account of a hostage rescue operation that occurred on the Mogadishu airport in 1977 when GSG-9 (German specal police unit) was involved in the rescue. This act predominantly inspired the American Military to speed up the formation of thier counter-terrorist unit widely called "Delta Force".
Why this book is not worth my 5th star is that the writing style is a bit "dry". For example, in the introductions i.e. the first 3 chapters, loads of names and information are just summarised and put together without a deeper dicussion. However, on a few places dicussion is present but not as much as it should be in my opinion. As I said before, this book reminds me more on one huge military newspaper article than on a political analysis of the problem that terrorism created today.

All in all I would like to recommend this book to all people that are interest in military and politics and those who wish to expand their views. What I found useful in this book is that I was finally able to connect and comprehend persons, organisations, governments that were responsible for all those crimes in contrast to their political victims. Moreover I finally know a large number of government organisations, political leaders and their security officers who directly and indirectly influenced the war on terrorism that took place not after that sad day, 11th of September, but 3 decades before. This book has more than 600 pages, everyone will find something useful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality reading, 22 Aug 2002
The book offers a complete run-down of terrorist and anti-terrorist groups in recent times. Well written and easy to understand the text is well structured and leads the reader through the subject in a sennsible manor and at a reasonable pace. Whilst the first few chapters feel slightly heavy, as there is an incredible depth of detail, this is necessary and the final chapters race by as the thread laid earlier tie together with terrorist and terrorist group meeting for each separate engagement.

Overall it is valuable reading for anyone interested or working in the field, and with a well constructed index forms a useful working text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic !, 15 Sep 2006

(REAL NAME)
This book has no bias towards any of the worlds Special Forces units and this shines through as you read it. It is a factual account of the how, when, where and why countries felt the need to form such units to combat the terrorism they faced. It gains much from the fact it is written by someone who has no axe to grind about the unit he was in being the best. It measures the success and failures of these units on their own merits and shows how they have worked together to promote their own areas of knowledge for the advantage of others. Whilst it is in essence a reference book it is also a page turner as you read about the exploits of ordinary men working in extraordinary circumstances and see what they can achieve. It is a quality, well researched and highly interesting book that is a must for anyone interested in Special Forces.
